The auditorium erupted into instant murmurs.
Flashbulbs popped from the back of the room as local journalists scrambled to capture the sudden, chaotic turn of events.
Derek shot out of his seat so fast his chair screeched loudly against the marble floor. “Objection! Madam Chair, this is completely out of order! Ms. Hartwell is disgruntled, biased, and presenting unverified, slanderous fabrications—”
“Mr. Mallory,” the head of the board interrupted sharply, gavel striking the wood. “Sit down. Ms. Hartwell has submitted certified federal forensic accounting disclosures backed by the SEC and the U.S. Attorney's office.”
Derek’s legal counsel grabbed his arm, whispering frantically, “Mr. Mallory, shut up, sit down, we need to leave right now—”
“No!” Derek hissed, his polished corporate veneer completely incinerated, revealing the panicked, desperate fraudster underneath. He pointed a shaking finger directly at Lena at the podium. “She’s lying! This is a personal vendetta because I broke up with her! She’s a bitter, obsessive woman who couldn't handle rejection!”
The audience gasped at the sheer audacity of his public gaslighting.
Before Lena could even open her mouth to reply, heavy double doors at the back of the auditorium swung open with a resounding thud.
Two federal marshals in dark suits, accompanied by local precinct detectives, walked down the center aisle with slow, deliberate authority.
The entire room went dead silent. You could hear a pin drop on the marble floor.
The lead marshal stopped directly behind Derek Mallory, placing a heavy hand on his tailored navy shoulder.
“Mr. Derek Mallory?” the marshal’s deep voice echoed across the microphone system. “You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, securities embezzlement, and corporate extortion. You have the right to remain silent...”
Derek froze. The color drained entirely from his face. He looked down at the silver handcuffs as they clicked into place around his wrists, the metallic snap ringing like a death knell for his fabricated empire.
As the marshals turned him around to escort him up the aisle, Derek’s eyes locked onto Lena standing calmly at the podium.
His expression twisted into one of pure, venomous hatred.
“You’ll pay for this, Lena!” Derek screamed, struggling uselessly against the marshals as he was dragged past the front rows. “You’ll never find a real man! You’ll die alone!”
“Take him away,” the board chairman said coldly, waving a hand in dismissal.
As Derek was hauled out of the auditorium doors in front of flashing cameras and a stunned crowd, the room erupted into thunderous applause.
