Chapter 3 - The Price of Treason

Bartholomew’s hand froze mid-air. The snipers hesitated.
"You're bluffing," Julian hissed, though a bead of sweat rolled down his temple. "You wouldn't kill yourself."
"I survived a burning palace when I was fifteen, Julian. Death and I are old friends," Elena said, her voice utterly devoid of fear. "But let's talk about what is actually happening tonight. This ball wasn't just a celebration of your winter harvest. It was a secret auction. You invited the foreign delegates from the Northern Empire to sell them our kingdom's border defense codes."
A murmur of shock broke out among the lower-tier nobles. They knew the Sterlings were corrupt, but selling out the realm's sovereignty to their historic enemy was treason of the highest order.
"Captain Thomas," Elena commanded. "Bring them in."
The heavy oak doors of the ballroom didn't just open this time—they were blown off their hinges. A squad of heavily armored soldiers, bearing the royal crest of the loyalist army, swarmed the room. Behind them walked three men in foreign military uniforms, bound in heavy chains.
They were the Northern delegates.
"We intercepted them at the harbor an hour ago," Thomas reported. "Along with the encrypted ledger detailing forty million gold pieces transferred directly into the Sterling private accounts."
Bartholomew went completely pale. The web of lies he had woven to keep the high society under his thumb was unraveling in a matter of seconds. The very nobles who had been laughing and drinking his champagne minutes ago began backing away from the Sterling family, shouting curses and disavowing any connection to them.
"You betrayed us!" one elderly count shouted. "You dragged our names into treason!"

"Silence!" Bartholomew roared, cornered and rabid. He grabbed a concealed pistol from his coat and aimed it directly at Elena. "If I fall, I take the bloodline with me!"
The Hook: A shot echoed through the ballroom, shattering a massive crystal mirror. But it wasn't Elena who fell.
