Chapter 4 - The Fall of the House of Sterling

Julian Sterling screamed as his father collapsed to the floor, clutching a bleeding shoulder. Standing directly behind the Duke, holding a smoking pistol, was someone no one expected.
Lady Victoria.
The glamorous fiancée stood over her future father-in-law, her face expressionless, the pistol steady in her hands.
"Victoria?!" Julian cried out in absolute betrayal. "What have you done?!"
Victoria didn't look at Julian. Instead, she dropped to one knee before Elena, laying the smoking gun at the princess's feet. "The House of Crimson has always been loyal to the true crown, Your Highness. My engagement to Julian was a directive from my father to infiltrate their inner circle and locate the stolen royal ledger. I have it here."
She pulled a thick, leather-bound book from the folds of her heavy silk gown and presented it to Elena.
The betrayal hit Julian like a physical blow. He fell to his knees beside his bleeding father, staring at the woman he loved, then up at the maid he had treated like dirt. In a matter of ten minutes, his wealth, his status, his future, and his bride had vanished into thin air.
Elena took the ledger. She flipped through the pages, seeing the names of every corrupt official, every bribed judge, and every traitor who had participated in her family’s slaughter.
"It is over, Julian," Elena said, looking down at him. "The empire you built on lies is turning to dust."
"You think you've won?" Julian spat, blood flecking his lips as he glared at her with pure venom. "The High Council still holds the capital city! The royal army will tear you apart before you ever reach the throne room!"

Elena smiled, a cold, majestic expression that sent shivers down the spines of everyone watching.
The Hook: "The High Council?" Elena laughed softly. "Julian, who do you think gave Captain Thomas the keys to the city gates tonight?"
