Chapter 2 - The Sound of SilenceThe heavy silence in the dining room fell like a lead curtain. The black titanium ring lay beside the platinum cufflinks, reflecting the dim glow of the crystal chandeliers.

Camille stared at the ring, her mouth slightly open, before her expression hardened into a bitter mask of disbelief. "Is this a joke, Gabriel? You’re making a scene over a maid who can’t hold a silver tray?"
Gabriel didn’t answer right away. He calmly walked past her, his polished shoes tapping a steady rhythm against the Italian marble. He stopped directly in front of Elena. The girl recoiled slightly, overcome with terror, but Gabriel merely reached out, his long fingers gently grasping her untouched wrist to inspect the severe burn spreading across her skin.
"Marco," Gabriel said quietly, his tone calm yet carrying an terrifying weight.
Marco stepped forward immediately from his post near the grand oak doors. "Boss."
"Take Elena to the private clinic in the east wing. Tell Dr. Vance to treat her burn personally. She gets two months of paid medical leave, starting tonight, and double her quarterly bonus."
Elena’s jaw dropped, tears brimming in her bloodshot eyes. "Mr. Moretti... I... I don't know what to say—"
"Don't say anything. Go," Gabriel murmured softly, releasing her arm.
Marco motioned to two security guards, who carefully ushered Elena out through the service entrance. The heavy doors clicked shut, leaving only Gabriel, Camille, and four armed guards standing like statues along the wood-paneled walls.
Camille let out a sharp, mocking laugh that echoed off the high ceilings. "You’re giving her paid leave? Double bonus? Are you out of your mind? She ruined dinner! She insulted this house!"
Gabriel turned around slowly, crossing his hands behind his back. "She made a mistake. You committed an act of deliberate malice. There is a vast difference."
"I am your fiancée!" Camille shouted, taking a heavy step toward him, her champagne silk dress rustling violently. "I represent this family! If you let the staff treat me with disrespect, they treat you with disrespect. I was upholding your authority!"
"You weren't upholding my authority, Camille," Gabriel replied, his dark eyes colder than the winter breeze outside. "You were abusing a position you haven't even earned yet. A real leader protects those under his roof. Only a weak coward cruel enough to hide behind my name uses hot tea as a weapon against a defenseless girl."
Camille flinched as if he had struck her across the face. Her cheeks flushed bright red, contrasting sharply with her perfectly styled blonde hair. "You can't do this to me. The Whitaker family controls the shipping licenses in the northern harbor. My father invested millions into your logistics firm last month! We are contractually tied!"
"Then your father can file a lawsuit," Gabriel said dryly. He leaned down, picked up the black ring, and held it between two fingers. "Or he can come collect his daughter before I decide to charge her with assault on my property."
"Gabriel, stop it!" Camille’s voice broke into a desperate screech. She reached for his arm, but Gabriel effortlessly took a step back, avoiding her touch entirely. "We have three hundred guests arriving for the engagement gala on Saturday! The invitations are sent! The media is waiting!"
"Cancel it," Gabriel instructed, his voice flat. He tossed the titanium band onto the table, where it bounced twice before settling right in front of her. "Or use the party to announce your departure from Boston."
"You wouldn't dare," she hissed, her blue eyes narrowing into slits filled with pure venom. "You think you can just throw me away like trash? You don't know what my father is capable of when his family honor is insulted. He will tear down every shipping lane you own!"
Gabriel took a slow, deliberate breath, stepping so close to Camille that she had to tilt her head back to look into his dark, unforgiving eyes.
"Your father exists in this city because I allow him to breathe," Gabriel whispered softly, the intensity of his tone causing Camille to shiver involuntarily. "Tell Arthur Whitaker that if he has a problem with my decision, he can come to the Moretti estate himself. But tell him to leave his bodyguards at home, because they won't save him."
Camille opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. For the first time since she had entered Gabriel's life, she felt genuine, suffocating fear. The man standing before her wasn’t the sophisticated billionaire who took her to the opera or bought her diamonds. He was the uncrowned king of the Massachusetts underworld—a man who had survived three assassination attempts before his thirtieth birthday.
"Get her coat," Gabriel ordered without looking back.
A guard immediately appeared, holding Camille’s white mink coat.
"Leave the ring," Gabriel added, turning his back on her as he walked toward his private study. "And make sure she doesn't take anything else that belongs to this family."

"Gabriel!" Camille screamed after him, her voice cracking with fury and humiliation. "You will regret this! I swear to God, you will beg me to come back!"
Gabriel didn't even pause. The heavy mahogany doors of his study swung shut behind him with a final, decisive thud, leaving Camille standing alone in the middle of the cold, silent dining room.
