Chapter 5 - The Poisoned ChaliceGabriel’s hand tightened around his phone. The cold morning rain drizzled down his face, but his eyes burned with an icy fire.

"Say that again," Gabriel commanded into the receiver.
"Elena saw Miss Whitaker drop a small, transparent capsule into your glass of bourbon while you were looking at the door," Dr. Vance explained urgently. "Elena tried to hurry over to swap your glass with a fresh water goblet. That’s why her hand was shaking. That’s why she spilled the tea—she was trying to knock your glass off the table before you took a sip."
Gabriel’s mind raced back to the dining room scene. He remembered the untouched glass of bourbon sitting near his right hand. He remembered how Elena had trembled, her eyes darting nervously between him and the table before the hot porcelain met her arm.
She hadn't been clumsy. She had been protecting him.
"Is the bourbon glass still in the dining room?" Gabriel asked Marco, who was standing nearby.
"No, Boss," Marco replied, catching the sudden shift in Gabriel's tone. "The cleaning crew was instructed to hold off on touching the dining room until you returned."
"Drive back to the estate. Fast," Gabriel ordered, stepping into the back seat of his SUV. "And call toxicology."
Twenty minutes later, the convoy roared through the iron gates of the Moretti estate. Gabriel strode into the dining room, his long coat trailing behind him. The room remained exactly as he had left it the night before: the spilled tea dried into a dark stain on the marble, the broken glass near the sideboard, and the untouched glass of amber bourbon sitting on the table.
A mobile lab technician who had arrived moments before Gabriel was already drawing a sample from the glass with a syringe.
"Well?" Gabriel demanded, standing over the table.
The technician ran the sample through a portable spectrometer, watching the digital readout on his screen. Within thirty seconds, the machine beeped loudly, displaying a red warning symbol.
"Tetrodotoxin," the technician reported, looking up with a pale face. "A refined, odorless derivative of pufferfish poison. A single sip would have paralyzed your respiratory system within ten minutes. It’s almost impossible to detect during a standard autopsy. It would have looked like a sudden, massive heart failure."
Marco gasped, drawing his sidearm reflexively as if an assassin were still in the room. "She wasn't trying to power-trip, Boss... She was trying to execute you."
Gabriel stood motionless, staring at the amber liquid. The pieces of the puzzle clicked together with terrifying precision.
The Whitaker family hadn't wanted an alliance; they wanted total inheritance. With Gabriel dead and Camille pregnant or married into the family, Arthur Whitaker would have assumed control of the entire Moretti network under the guise of managing the estate for his grieving daughter.
And Elena had taken a severe chemical burn to her arm just to save his life.
"Where is Camille right now?" Gabriel asked, his voice dropping to a register so low it sounded like a growl from a predatory animal.
Marco checked his tracking monitor. "After leaving your house, she checked into the penthouse suite at the Grand Regency Hotel. Her father called her ten minutes ago—likely right after leaving Pier 9. They are consolidating their offshore accounts."
"She thinks she’s safe in a hotel surrounded by reporters and private guards," Gabriel said softly.
He walked over to his study, opened a wall safe concealed behind an oil painting of his grandfather, and pulled out a sleek silver briefcase. Inside lay a pair of customized black steel handguns, complete with integrated suppressors.
"Boss," Marco cautioned gently. "The Grand Regency is owned by the Russian syndicate. If we start a war in their venue—"
"The Russians won't interfere," Gabriel interrupted, loading a magazine into the pistol with a crisp click. "Victor Petrov owes me for saving his son in Miami three years ago. Call him. Tell him Gabriel Moretti is coming to clean up a piece of trash in his house, and he should have his staff take an early dinner."
Gabriel walked to the window, looking out over his vast estate.
"And Marco?"
May you like
"Yes, Boss?"
"Bring Elena to my private library when she’s ready. When this night is over, she will never have to work another day in her life. But first... I have a wedding invitation to return."
