Chapter 7 - The Mastermind’s LedgerThree days after the arrests at the Grand Regency Hotel, the news of the Whitaker empire's complete collapse dominated every major television network across the country. Headlines screamed about corporate espionage, attempted mob assassinations, and high-level corruption.

The Whitaker name was utterly ruined. Their assets were frozen by the federal government, their properties auctioned off, and both Arthur and Camille were held without bail in a high-security federal detention center awaiting trial.

Inside the quiet, sunlit library of the Moretti estate, Gabriel sat behind his large oak desk. The smell of old leather books and mahogany filled the warm air.

Sitting across from him was Elena Brooks. Her burned arm was neatly wrapped in clean medical bandages, and she was dressed in a soft, elegant cashmere sweater provided by Gabriel’s personal staff. She sat awkwardly on the edge of the plush leather chair, clearly unaccustomed to being treated as an honored guest in such a grand room.

"How is the arm, Elena?" Gabriel asked softly, sliding a porcelain tea cup toward her. This time, it was filled with warm chamomile tea he had poured himself.

"It doesn't hurt anymore, Mr. Moretti," Elena whispered, holding the cup with both hands. "Dr. Vance said the scarring will be minimal thanks to the treatment."

"Good," Gabriel said. He pulled a thick leather-bound binder from his desk and laid it between them. "I asked you here today because I owe you an explanation. And an offering."

Elena looked confused. "An offering?"

Gabriel opened the binder. Inside were land titles, legal documents, and ownership deeds for a private four-star bakery located in the heart of downtown Boston, complete with a luxury residential apartment on the top floor.

"Before you worked here, your mother owned a small pastry shop in South Boston," Gabriel explained gently. "Arthur Whitaker bought out the lease four years ago and demolished it to expand his shipping yard, driving your family into bankruptcy. That’s why you had to take a service job here."

Elena’s eyes filled with tears. "You... you knew about that?"

"I didn't know until the night of the incident," Gabriel admitted honestly. "When I investigated Camille’s bank transfers, I realized she had threatened to fire you and blacklist your family if you didn't participate in her little power play. But what she didn't know was that you were smart enough to turn her game against her."

Elena looked down at her tea cup, her fingers trembling slightly. "I couldn't let her kill you, Mr. Moretti. You were the only person in this city who treated the staff with dignity. When I saw her drop that pill into your glass, I didn't care about the consequences. I just had to stop you from drinking it."

Gabriel stood up, walked around the desk, and handed her a golden key along with the title documents.

"This bakery belongs to you now, Elena. Fully paid, no mortgages, no debt. Your brother has already been hired as the operations manager, and your mother’s old recipes will be on the menu starting next month."

Elena stared at the key in her palm, tears overflowing and dripping onto the smooth gold metal. "Mr. Moretti... I can't accept this. It's too much—"

"It is not a gift, Elena," Gabriel said with absolute seriousness. "It is a debt paid. You saved my life. A Moretti always pays his debts."

He gently helped her stand up. "Marco is waiting outside to drive you to your new home. Go build a life you are proud of."

Elena wiped her cheeks, holding the binder tightly against her chest. She bowed deeply to Gabriel. "Thank you... thank you, Gabriel."

As Elena left the study, Marco walked in, holding a black leather folder.

"She’s a good girl, Boss," Marco remarked, watching the car pull away down the long estate driveway.

"She’s better than most of the people who sit at my table," Gabriel replied, walking over to the window. "What about the final arrangements?"

Marco opened the folder. "Camille Whitaker’s trial has been fast-tracked. Her defense attorney tried to plead insanity, but the prosecution has over two hundred pages of encrypted chat logs showing she planned the poisoning three weeks in advance. She’s looking at twenty-five years without parole."

"And Arthur?"

"Heart attack in his cell this morning," Marco reported casually. "The paramedics couldn't revive him."

Gabriel didn't show a hint of surprise. He simply nodded, taking a deep breath of the fresh afternoon air coming through the open window. The storm had passed, leaving behind clear blue skies over Boston.

"Clean the dining room, Marco," Gabriel said softly. "Replace the marble floor where the tea was spilled. I want every trace of the Whitaker family erased from this house."

"Right away, Boss," Marco replied. "And what about the engagement gala on Saturday?"

Gabriel reached into his pocket and pulled out the simple black titanium ring he had taken off days before. He looked at it for a brief moment before tossing it into the lit fireplace, where the intense heat slowly consumed the metal.

"We aren't canceling the party," Gabriel said, a subtle, confident smile returning to his face. "We are celebrating a new era for the Moretti family."
