CHAPTER 4 â The Dead Manâs Signature

The police arrived within minutes.
Daniel tried to leave with his lawyers, but Emma stood up barefoot, her wet dress dragging behind her like a ghost.
"No one leaves," she said.
Her voice was quiet.
But every person on that rooftop heard it.
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"You think you control this? You were nothing before me."
Emma looked at him.
Then she said the sentence that made his smile vanish.
"No, Daniel. You were nothing before my father's money."
Vanessa turned pale.
Daniel froze.
Emma held up the insurance document.
"My father didn't just die in an accident, did he?"
No one answered.
But silence was enough.
A police detective took the paper and studied the fake signature. Then he looked at Daniel.
"Where did you get this?"
Daniel said nothing.
Vanessa suddenly broke.
"He said it was only business!" she cried. "He said Emma would sign everything after the wedding, then the accident would happen later. I didn't know he would do it tonight!"
The rooftop went completely still.
Emma's knees nearly gave out.
Daniel turned toward Vanessa with pure hatred.
"You stupid woman."
But before he could say more, Emma's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A distorted voice whispered,
"Your father is not dead."
Emma stopped breathing.
The voice continued,
"He has been hiding because Daniel's family tried to kill him first. Go to the old Carter lake house. Alone."
Then the call ended.
Emma stared at the dark screen.
Everyone around her was shouting nowâpolice, guests, reporters, Daniel screaming that it was a setup.
But Emma heard only one thing.
Her father was alive.
And the man she had almost married had not been the beginning of the nightmare.
He was only the door.
Behind that door was a secret powerful enough to make someone turn a wedding into a murder scene.

And before sunrise...
Emma would learn that the person who pushed her into the pool was not the most dangerous enemy standing beside her that night.
