CHAPTER 6 â The Father Who Walked Out of the Shadows

Richard smiled calmly.
"You always were too curious."
Emma backed toward the window.
"You killed my father."
Richard laughed.
"No."
"He refused to die."
Before Emma could react...
A gunshot shattered the bedroom window.
Richard stumbled backward.
Blood spread across his shoulder.
"Whatâ?"
Another shot struck the ceiling.
Everyone ducked.
Then a deep voice echoed from outside.
"Drop the weapon."
Emma recognized that voice instantly.
Impossible.
Richard rushed toward the hallway.
Another bullet shattered the railing.
Masked security officers stormed the house from every entrance.
Richard was forced to his knees.
The front door slowly opened.
A tall man with gray hair stepped inside.
Older.
Thinner.
Scarred across one side of his face.
But unmistakable.
Emma's knees gave out.
"Dad..."
Tears filled her eyes.
Michael Carter was alive.
He embraced his daughter for the first time in six years.
"I wanted to come back sooner," he whispered.
"But if they knew I survived... they would've killed you too."
Emma sobbed against his shoulder.
Then Michael looked directly at Richard.
"You told everyone I died in that explosion."
Richard lowered his head.
Michael continued,
"You stole my company."
"You helped Daniel marry my daughter."
"And tonight..."
"You almost finished what you started."
Richard smiled through bloody lips.
"You still don't understand."
Michael frowned.
Richard began laughing.
"The Carter fortune..."
"It was never yours."
He looked straight at Emma.
"The real heir has been living under another name for twenty-seven years."
The room fell silent.
Emma stared at her father.
He looked away.
That single reaction told her everything.
The biggest lie of her life wasn't Daniel.
It wasn't the fake funeral.
It wasn't the attempted murder.
May you like
It was her own identity.
And the truth would destroy everything she believed about her family.
