CHAPTER 4 – "The Child Who Was Never Meant to Live"

Richard couldn't sleep.
The kidnapper's words echoed in his mind all night.
"You'll never see either of your children alive again."
Either.
Not one.
Two.
He slowly turned toward Emma.
"What if... they're talking about you?"
Emma shook her head.
"That doesn't make any sense."
Before Richard could answer, Detective Mason rushed into the room carrying a sealed evidence box.
"We've identified the phone used to send the kidnapping message."
Richard stood up.
"Who owns it?"
The detective hesitated.
"You won't believe this."
He placed an old employee badge on the table.
Name: Sarah Collins.
The nanny.
But underneath her photo was another title.
Family Protection Unit.
Emma frowned.
"What is that?"
The detective sighed.
"It wasn't a nanny agency."
"It was a private organization hired by wealthy families to erase scandals... hide affairs... and make inconvenient people disappear."
Silence filled the room.
Richard's fists tightened.
"So they took Noah..."
"No," the detective replied.
"They've taken children before."
"They raise them under new identities... then use them as leverage years later."
Emma felt her knees weaken.
"What if..."
"What if I was one of those children?"
Nobody answered.
Because everyone was thinking the same thing.
Meanwhile...
Inside an abandoned lakeside cabin nearly fifty miles away...
Sarah gently rocked baby Noah to sleep.
She wasn't acting like a kidnapper.
She was acting like a mother.
A shadow stepped out from the darkness.
An older man wearing leather gloves.
"Is the boy safe?" he asked.
Sarah nodded.
"He never should have gone back to the Ashfords."
The man smiled.
"He is worth billions."
Sarah looked confused.
"I thought Richard was his father."
The old man laughed.
"Richard has never been Noah's father."
"He isn't even the richest member of that family."
Sarah's eyes widened.
"Then who is?"
The man slowly opened a metal briefcase.
Inside were birth certificates...
DNA reports...
And one document stamped:
CONFIDENTIAL – ASHFORD SUCCESSION PROGRAM
At the top was Noah's photo.
Below it, another photograph.
Emma.
The two files were connected by a thick red line.
Sarah whispered,
"They're... siblings?"
The old man smiled.
"Worse."
"They are the only surviving heirs."
At that exact moment...
Richard received another anonymous package.
Inside was a tiny silver bracelet.
Emma recognized it instantly.
"My mother made this..."
Tears filled her eyes.
Beneath it was a single photograph.
A newborn baby...
lying beside another newborn.
Both babies wore identical bracelets.
On the back, someone had written:
May you like
"Only one of them was supposed to survive."
