CHAPTER 5 – "The Billion-Dollar Lie"

Emma couldn't breathe.
She stared at the faded photograph of the two newborn babies.
One was wrapped in a blue blanket.
The other in white.
Both wore the same silver bracelet her mother had handcrafted years ago.
Richard's hands trembled.
"Where... where was this taken?"
Detective Mason turned the photograph over.
A hospital stamp appeared beneath years of faded ink.
St. Gabriel Medical Center.
The date matched Emma's birthday.
Richard whispered,
"I remember that day..."
"My wife told me one baby died during childbirth."
Emma looked up.
"You believed her?"
"I buried an empty coffin," Richard replied, tears filling his eyes. "I never saw the baby's face."
Silence swallowed the room.
Someone had stolen a child.
Someone had built an entire fortune on that lie.
Hours later...
The police raided St. Gabriel Medical Center's abandoned archives.
Dust covered thousands of forgotten files.
Most had been destroyed.
But one fireproof safe remained untouched.
Inside...
Only one folder.
ASHFORD SUCCESSION PROGRAM
Detective Mason slowly opened it.
Every page exposed another horrifying secret.
DNA swaps.
Forged birth certificates.
Fake death records.
Bribed doctors.
Paid judges.
Even murdered witnesses.
Emma covered her mouth.
"This wasn't one crime..."
"It was an entire business."
Richard collapsed into a chair.
"For twenty-two years..."
"My own family has been living inside a lie."
Then Mason found the final page.
A handwritten list of names.
Most had a red X beside them.
Doctors.
Lawyers.
Nurses.
Witnesses.
Dead.
Only three names remained uncrossed.
Richard Ashford.
Emma Carter.
Baby Noah.
Richard stared at the page.
"They're eliminating everyone who knows the truth."
Before anyone could react...
The lights inside the archive suddenly went out.
Darkness.
Complete silence.
Then...
A gunshot echoed through the building.
Everyone hit the floor.
Another shot shattered a nearby window.
Masked men stormed inside wearing black tactical gear.
"Burn everything!"
One shouted.
The archives erupted into flames.
Detective Mason grabbed the folder.
"Run!"
Richard pulled Emma toward the emergency exit.
Smoke filled every hallway.
Just as they reached the door...
A masked man stepped into their path.
He lowered his rifle.
Then slowly removed his mask.
Emma gasped.
"No..."
It was the old butler.
The same loyal servant who had worked for the Ashfords for over thirty years.
The man Richard trusted more than anyone.
The butler smiled calmly.
"I raised you, Richard."
"I also buried your past."
He pointed the gun directly at Emma.
Then quietly said the words that froze everyone in place.
May you like
"Your mother didn't die... she's the one who ordered all of this."
