Chapter 5 - The Fall of the House of Vanessa“Richard Whitmore, Victor Thorne, you are both under arrest for conspiracy, corporate embezzlement, frame-up fraud, and federal drug trafficking violations,” the lead agent declared, stepping forward with handcuffs.

Richard tried to run toward the side door, but an agent tackled him to the carpet, pinning his arm behind his back. The metal cuffs clicked loud and sharp in the silent room.

“Vanessa!” Richard screamed from the floor. “Do something! Help me!”

Vanessa backed away into the corner, trembling violently, her eyes darting like a trapped animal’s. “I... I had nothing to do with this! He did it all on his own!”

“Oh, don't worry, Vanessa,” Elena said, walking right up to her aunt-in-law—or rather, her half-sister-in-law. “We haven't forgotten about you.”

Elena pulled out a second document.

“For the past three years,” Elena explained to the board, “Vanessa has been running a non-profit charity called ‘The Crestview Children’s Foundation.’ Over $4 million in public donations passed through that charity. But forensic accounting shows that 85% of those funds were diverted to pay for private jet charters, high-end jewelry, and gold-dusted birthday party cupcakes.”

The board members looked at Vanessa with absolute disgust.

“You stole money meant for impoverished children,” Margaret said, looking at Vanessa with pure contempt. “While you sat my granddaughter beside the trash and mocked her for being poor, you were stealing from real poor children to fund your hollow vanity.”

Vanessa fell to her knees, sobbing hysterical, ugly tears. “Mother... please! For the sake of the children! For Parker and Sloane!”

“Parker and Sloane will be taken care of by a court-appointed legal guardian,” Margaret stated without an ounce of pity. “You, Vanessa, will face the consequences of your own rot.”

The federal agents pulled Richard to his feet and cuffed Dr. Thorne. A second team of local police officers stepped into the room to escort Vanessa out in broad daylight.

As Vanessa was led through the lobby of Whitmore Headquarters, news cameras flashed from every angle. Her mugshot—streaked with mascara, eyes wild with panic—was broadcast on every major network within the hour.
