CHAPTER 2 – THE WOMAN SHE HUMILIATED WAS THE ONLY PERSON WHO KNEW THE TRUTH

The music stopped.

Guests whispered nervously.

Isabella couldn't take her eyes off the photograph.

"This... this isn't possible."

The elderly maid slowly stood up.

She no longer looked frightened.

She looked exhausted.

"I prayed," she said quietly, "that you would never have to learn the truth this way."

The room fell silent.

The groom frowned.

"What truth?"

The old woman took a deep breath.

"Twenty-six years ago..."

"Your mother didn't die in a car accident."

Gasps echoed through the ballroom.

"She was being hunted."

"Someone wanted the Hartwell fortune."

"So she gave me her newborn daughter..."

"...and begged me to hide her until it was safe."

Isabella laughed nervously.

"Stop lying!"

"My father would have told me."

The maid slowly shook her head.

"Your father wasn't trying to protect you."

"He was the one who betrayed your mother."

Every face in the ballroom turned toward the powerful billionaire standing in the front row.

He looked frozen.

Sweat rolled down his forehead.

The maid reached into her worn handbag and placed a small envelope on the table.

Inside were hospital records.

Birth certificates.

Letters.

DNA reports.

And one final document.

A handwritten confession signed by Isabella's own father.

The confession admitted everything.

The betrayal.

The stolen inheritance.

The murder conspiracy.

And the woman everyone believed was only a servant...

...had spent twenty-six years protecting the real heir.

Before anyone could react...

Police officers entered the ballroom.

"Richard Hartwell..."

"You're under arrest."

Guests screamed.

Reporters rushed inside.

Cameras flashed nonstop.

As her father was taken away in handcuffs, Isabella slowly turned toward the woman she had forced to kneel only minutes earlier.

With tears running down her face, she whispered,

"I thought you were nobody..."

The old woman gave a heartbreaking smile.

"I was never nobody."

"I was simply the last promise your mother ever asked me to keep."

But just as everyone believed the nightmare was finally over...

A young man walked through the ballroom holding another sealed envelope.

"There is one more secret."

"My mother told me to deliver this only after Richard was arrested."

Isabella opened it with trembling hands.

Inside was another DNA report.

This time...

It proved she wasn't Richard Hartwell's daughter at all.

And the real father...

Was standing somewhere inside that very ballroom.
