CHAPTER 1 – The Forgotten Photograph

The attic smell

ed of dust, old wood, and forgotten memories.

Emma Carter climbed the narrow stairs only because the realtor insisted the family home had to be emptied before it could be sold. Her grandmother had passed away only a week earlier, leaving behind a lifetime of unopened boxes.

She wasn't looking for answers.

She was looking for junk.

But fate had hidden something else.

At the bottom of an old military trunk wrapped in yellowed newspapers lay a faded photograph.

The edges were torn.

The colors had almost disappeared.

Yet one face remained painfully clear.

A young woman—her grandmother, Rose.

Standing beside her...

A smiling man in an army uniform.

Holding a newborn baby.

Emma frowned.

That wasn't strange.

Until she looked closer.

The baby wore a tiny silver bracelet engraved with one word.

EMMA.

Her heart skipped.

Impossible.

She was only twenty-eight.

This photo had been taken more than thirty years ago.

How could she be the baby?

Then another detail froze her blood.

The man wasn't her father.

She knew every wrinkle on her father's face.

This man had different eyes.

Different smile.

Different jawline.

On the back of the photograph someone had written, in faded blue ink:

"If she ever learns the truth... forgive me."

Emma's hands began to shake.

"What truth?"

Just then she heard footsteps behind her.

Her father, Richard Carter, stood at the attic door.

The moment he saw the photograph...

Every drop of color vanished from his face.

"Where did you find that?"

His voice cracked.

Emma had never seen him afraid.

She held up the picture.

"Who's this man?"

Richard rushed forward.

"So that's what Grandma was hiding..."

Before Emma could react, he snatched the photograph from her hands.

"You were never supposed to see this."

Then—

He tore the picture straight down the middle.

Emma gasped.

"Dad! What are you doing?"

Richard's breathing became uneven.

His hands trembled violently.

"You don't understand."

"No."

Emma stared into his terrified eyes.

"I think you're the one who's been hiding something."

Without another word, Richard walked downstairs.

But Emma noticed something he'd failed to destroy.

A tiny folded piece of paper had slipped from inside the photograph.

She quietly picked it up.

Inside was a single address.

An abandoned lighthouse on the northern coast.

And beneath it...

One sentence.

"He has been waiting for thirty years."

Emma's entire world tilted.

Who had been waiting?

May you like

And why had her father looked terrified instead of surprised?

She had a feeling the answer would destroy everything she believed about her family.
