CHAPTER 5 – The Man Who Erased His Own Death

Emma stared at the birth certificate.

Her vision blurred.

The name printed under Father was one every American had heard before.

General Alexander Hayes.

A decorated war hero.

A man declared dead during a classified military operation thirty years earlier.

The government had honored him.

Schools were named after him.

His funeral had been broadcast nationwide.

Emma slowly looked up.

"...That's impossible."

Michael didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he opened another folder from the safe.

Inside were military reports stamped:

TOP SECRET – DESTROY AFTER READING

The first page contained a photograph.

It showed General Alexander Hayes standing beside President William Foster during a ceremony.

But Emma wasn't looking at the President.

Standing quietly in the background...

Twenty-five years younger...

Was Richard Carter.

Her uncle.

The man who had raised her.

"What was he doing there?"

Michael sighed.

"He wasn't just my younger brother."

"He was Alexander's personal security officer."

Emma frowned.

"Then why lie about everything?"

Michael closed his eyes.

"Because the night your father disappeared..."

"...someone inside our own government betrayed him."

Silence filled the cabin.

Michael spread dozens of classified documents across the table.

Each page described the same secret operation.

Project Genesis.

It wasn't a military weapon.

It wasn't biological research.

It was something far more dangerous.

A hidden list.

The names of politicians, billionaires, judges, military officers, and intelligence agents who had secretly sold classified information for decades.

Anyone who possessed the list...

Could destroy careers.

Collapse governments.

Start wars.

Emma whispered,

"My father stole it?"

Michael nodded.

"No."

"He protected it."

A knock suddenly echoed through the cabin.

Three slow knocks.

Then silence.

Michael instantly grabbed his pistol.

"They found us."

The lights went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

A laser sight appeared on the wall.

Then another.

Then ten more.

Voices shouted outside.

"Federal agents!"

"Come out with your hands up!"

Emma started toward the door.

Michael pulled her back.

"Those aren't federal agents."

"Run!"

The back wall exploded inward.

Smoke filled the cabin.

As masked men rushed inside...

Richard Carter stepped through the doorway.

Still wearing the same calm smile.

He slowly clapped his hands.

"Thirty years, Michael."

"And you still couldn't keep her hidden."

Emma stared at the man she had called Dad her entire life.

"You lied to me..."

Richard looked almost heartbroken.

May you like

"No."

"I lied to protect you."
