CHAPTER 4 – The Woman Who Never Died

Rain hammered against the cabin windows.
Michael unlocked an old steel safe hidden beneath the floorboards.
Inside were dozens of classified military files.
Cassette tapes.
Passport photos.
And one unopened letter.
Across the envelope were five words.
Open Only If Emma Returns.
Emma's hands trembled.
"It has my name..."
Michael nodded.
"Your mother wrote it."
Emma stared at him.
"That's impossible."
"You said she was murdered."
Michael looked into the fire.
"I said they wanted her dead."
"That doesn't mean they succeeded."
Emma's breathing stopped.
Michael slid a videotape across the table.
"I've waited thirty years for you to see this."
The tape crackled to life.
A young woman appeared on the screen.
She smiled directly into the camera.
Emma felt tears instantly fill her eyes.
She had seen that smile every morning in the mirror.
It was her own.
The woman spoke softly.
"If you're watching this..."
"...then I failed to come back."
"My beautiful Emma..."
"I never abandoned you."
Emma broke down crying.
"Mom..."
The woman continued.
"Never trust Richard."
"He made a promise to protect you..."
"But promises can be bought."
Emma looked toward Michael in horror.
"You mean my uncle betrayed us?"
Michael closed his eyes.
"I hoped he hadn't."
Just then...
A satellite phone hidden inside the safe began ringing.
No one knew that number.
Michael answered carefully.
A familiar voice echoed through the room.
"Hello, brother."
Richard Carter.
"I know Emma is with you."
Michael's face hardened.
"What do you want?"
Richard laughed quietly.
"I don't want Emma."
"I want what's hidden inside the letter."
Emma looked down at the unopened envelope.
Richard spoke one final sentence before hanging up.
"Because if she reads it..."
"...she'll discover who her real father actually is."
The call disconnected.
Emma slowly turned toward Michael.
His silence told her everything.
Then, with trembling hands...
She finally opened the envelope.
Inside was a birth certificate.
The father's name wasn't Richard Carter.
It wasn't Michael Hayes either.
It was a name Emma had seen only in history books.
A man officially declared dead...
May you like
Thirty years ago.
To be continued...
