CHAPTER 1 — The Blood That Changed an Empire

The needle slid into Clara Hayes's arm.

She never asked the man's name.

She never asked why half the emergency room suddenly filled with men wearing expensive black suits while pretending to be ordinary visitors.

She never noticed that every one of them carried a gun.

All she cared about...

...was the beeping heart monitor in the next room.

"Pressure's dropping!"

"Start transfusion!"

"Come on... stay with us..."

The doctors moved with terrifying speed.

Clara watched the crimson blood flow through the transparent tube.

Her blood.

Flowing into someone she would probably never meet.

Nurse Helen looked at her.

"Most people would've walked away."

Clara smiled weakly.

"Someone would've helped."

Helen didn't answer.

Because nobody else had.

The blood bank was empty.

The Red Cross couldn't reach the hospital for another forty-five minutes.

The patient had less than five.

Without Clara...

...he would've died.

Forty minutes later the transfusion ended.

Clara stood slowly.

The room spun.

"You need to rest."

"I can't."

She checked her phone.

Seven missed calls.

All from Owen.

Her stomach dropped.

She immediately called back.

Her younger brother answered on the first ring.

"I'm okay," Owen said before she could speak.

"I just couldn't breathe earlier."

Clara closed her eyes.

Another asthma attack.

"Were you alone?"

"Yeah."

"You should've called 911."

"I didn't want another hospital bill."

That sentence hurt more than anything.

A seventeen-year-old boy...

...already thinking like someone drowning in debt.

"I'll be home soon."

She hung up and quietly gathered her things.

Helen stopped her near the door.

"You qualify for a donor compensation check."

Clara blinked.

"Really?"

"It isn't much."

The envelope contained...

Three hundred dollars.

Clara stared at it.

Three hundred dollars.

Enough to buy Owen's medication.

Enough to keep the electricity on.

Enough to eat something besides instant noodles for a week.

She almost cried.

Not because it was a lot.

Because lately...

Even tiny miracles felt impossible.

Outside...

Rain poured across Chicago.

She hurried toward the pharmacy.

She bought every prescription Owen needed.

She even bought his favorite chocolate cookies.

The cashier smiled.

"Big night?"

Clara laughed softly.

"No."

"Just... a lucky one."

She had no idea...

...that the man whose life she had saved controlled nearly half the city after midnight.

Meanwhile...

Four floors above her...

Trauma Room One.

Every doctor suddenly stopped talking.

The heart monitor...

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

A heartbeat.

Slow.

Weak.

Alive.

Doctor Mason exhaled.

"We got him back."

The room became silent.

One surgeon whispered...

"I thought he was dead."

"So did I."

No one noticed the elderly janitor quietly making the sign of the cross.

Everyone in that room knew...

Someone impossible had just survived.

At exactly 3:14 a.m....

Three black SUVs arrived.

Then five more.

Then ten.

The hospital entrances were sealed.

Visitors were escorted outside.

Police officers unexpectedly disappeared from the lobby.

Hospital security suddenly answered to different people.

Men in tailored Italian suits walked inside without speaking.

Every nurse instinctively stepped aside.

One older physician whispered...

"Oh God..."

"They're here."

Because everyone who mattered in Chicago's underworld knew one name.

Leo Salvatore.

The King.

The man who wasn't supposed to survive the night.

And nobody yet realized...

May you like

The empire's future now depended on a waitress who had already gone home.
