CHAPTER 3 — The Necklace That Shouldn't Exist

The silver locket haunted Leo all night.
He ordered the security footage replayed.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Each time the blurry image froze on the same frame.
The waitress.
The exhausted eyes.
The tiny oval necklace resting against her collarbone.
Marco finally asked...
"What is it?"
Leo didn't answer immediately.
Instead...
He reached into the bedside drawer.
Inside lay an old photograph.
Faded.
Folded dozens of times.
Taken twenty-one years earlier.
Two laughing children stood beside an elderly woman.
Around the little girl's neck...
The exact same silver locket.
Marco stared.
"That's impossible."
Leo nodded slowly.
"It belonged to my mother."
Twenty-one years earlier...
A fire had consumed the Salvatore family home.
Police declared everyone inside dead.
Except Leo.
His mother.
His younger sister.
Gone forever.
Or so everyone believed.
The necklace had disappeared with them.
Now...
Somehow...
A poor waitress wore it.
"Find her today."
Leo's voice carried no anger.
Only urgency.
"I don't care what it costs."
"If anyone hurts her while searching..."
"They answer to me."
At the same moment...
Clara sat in a crowded employment office.
No interviews.
No savings.
No future.
Her phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
"Miss Hayes?"
"Yes?"
"This is St. Jude's Hospital."
"We found something that belongs to you."
Clara frowned.
"I didn't lose anything."
"You'll want to come."
She arrived twenty minutes later.
Nurse Helen smiled sadly.
"You left before we could thank you."
She handed Clara a sealed envelope.
Inside...
A handwritten note.
No signature.
Only one sentence.
Because of you... someone gets another chance to live.
Folded beneath it...
Was a cashier's check.
$500,000.
Clara's hands began shaking.
"There has to be a mistake."
Helen looked confused.
"I didn't put that there."
Neither had the hospital.
Across the parking lot...
Inside a black armored limousine...
Leo watched through tinted glass.
He had ordered Marco to deliver one simple gift.
Enough money to change her life.
Nothing more.
He never expected what happened next.
Clara stared at the check.
Then quietly folded it.
Walked back inside.
And handed it to the hospital foundation.
"For children who can't afford treatment."
Helen gasped.
"You need this."
Clara smiled through tired eyes.
"So do they."
She walked away carrying...
Nothing.
Leo remained frozen.
Every man in the limousine waited for instructions.
Instead...
Their feared boss whispered words no one had ever heard him say.
"She just became..."
"...the richest person I know."
At that exact second...
A black SUV accelerated from the far end of the parking lot.
Its engine screamed.
The driver wasn't aiming for the road.
He was aiming...
May you like
Straight at Clara.
