CHAPTER 1 – The Hug That Changed Everything

The last thing Emma Carter remembered before her entire life unraveled... was trying not to cry in public.
After thirty-six exhausting hours inside one of Boston's busiest trauma centers, every muscle in her body screamed for sleep. Her hands still smelled faintly of antiseptic despite washing them countless times. She had pronounced two patients dead before sunrise, comforted a frightened little boy whose parents never arrived, and skipped every meal except a stale granola bar she found in her locker.
Then her phone vibrated.
Not a thank-you.
Not an apology.
Just one sentence.
"I met someone else. Please don't contact me again."
Four years.
Gone in eleven words.
Emma stared at the screen until the letters blurred together.
She didn't realize she had boarded the wrong subway.
She didn't notice she'd ridden six stations too far.
She barely remembered stepping onto an almost empty platform just after midnight.
Then she saw him.
Tall.
Dark overcoat.
The same broad shoulders.
The same slightly messy dark hair as her older brother Michael, who had returned from military deployment only a month earlier.
For one desperate second...
Her exhausted brain stopped distinguishing memory from reality.
She ran.
Without thinking.
Without speaking.
She threw her arms around the stranger from behind.
"I'm so glad you're here..."
The words escaped before she could stop them.
Everything froze.
The man slowly lowered the phone from his ear.
Silence swallowed the station.
When he turned around...
Emma's heart nearly stopped.
This wasn't Michael.
This man looked nothing like him.
Steel-gray eyes.
A sharp jawline.
A tiny scar near his temple.
The kind of face that belonged on magazine covers instead of subway platforms.
She jumped backward so fast she nearly slipped onto the yellow safety line.
"Oh my God... I'm so sorry!"
"I thought..."
"I wasn't..."
"I mean..."
Nothing coherent came out.
The stranger studied her for several long seconds.
Most people would have laughed.
Some would have been angry.
Others might have called security.
Instead...
He asked quietly,
"When was the last time someone hugged you because they wanted to?"
The question shattered every wall she'd spent years building.
Her eyes filled instantly.
The stranger stepped closer.
"I'm Ethan Blackwood."
She blinked.
The name sounded familiar.
Very familiar.
Then she noticed the men watching from both ends of the platform.
Black suits.
Hidden earpieces.
Military posture.
They weren't passengers.
They were protecting him.
Emma suddenly realized she'd just hugged one of the richest men in America.
May you like
And judging by the horrified expressions on the security team's faces...
She had just broken about twenty different security protocols.
