CHAPTER 2 – The Billionaire Who Wouldn't Let Her Walk Away

"Sir."
One of the bodyguards hurried forward.
"We need to leave immediately."
Ethan didn't move.
His eyes never left Emma.
"What hospital?"
She looked confused.
"Saint Vincent."
"You've been working thirty-six hours?"
She nodded.
"And you've eaten?"
Silence.
That answered everything.
Without another word Ethan removed his expensive cashmere coat and wrapped it around her shoulders.
The bodyguards exchanged uneasy glances.
They had protected Ethan Blackwood for eight years.
He never touched strangers.
Never.
He rarely shook hands.
Yet tonight...
He looked at this exhausted nurse as though she'd appeared from another lifetime.
Emma tried returning the coat.
"I can't take this."
"You already did."
He smiled.
"So now you might as well keep wearing it."
She laughed despite herself.
The sound surprised both of them.
It was the first genuine laugh she'd managed in weeks.
Then...
Three men emerged from the opposite staircase.
Leather jackets.
Baseball caps.
Faces hidden.
Too interested.
Too coordinated.
Ethan noticed them instantly.
His expression changed.
The warmth disappeared.
"Stay behind me."
Emma frowned.
"What?"
The three strangers accelerated.
One reached inside his jacket.
Every bodyguard drew weapons simultaneously.
People screamed.
The subway platform erupted into chaos.
Emma stood frozen.
She had no idea that the accidental hug she'd given five minutes earlier...
Had interrupted an assassination attempt months in preparation.
Because those men hadn't come for her.
They had come for Ethan Blackwood.
And now...
Every surveillance camera showed one unexpected witness.
A nurse.
Who had been standing close enough to recognize every face.
May you like
Which meant...
She had just become the most dangerous civilian in New York.
