CHAPTER 7 – The Voice Behind the Door

The steel blast door groaned as its locking bolts slowly disengaged.

One.

Two.

Three.

Each metallic click echoed through the underground panic room like the countdown to an execution.

Emma's breathing became shallow.

"Ethan..."

She barely managed to whisper his name.

He stepped in front of her instinctively, shielding her with his body.

"No matter what happens," he said quietly, "you stay behind me."

The emergency lights flickered blood red, casting long shadows across the concrete walls.

Outside the door, footsteps echoed through the corridor.

Not hurried.

Not chaotic.

Calm.

Confident.

Whoever was coming knew exactly where they were.

Ethan pressed a hidden button beneath the control panel.

Nothing happened.

The entire security system had been disabled.

"They've hacked the estate," he muttered.

His chief of security checked his phone.

"No signal."

"Radio?"

"Dead."

"Cameras?"

"Offline."

Someone had spent months preparing for this night.

Then...

The blast door opened.

Slowly.

A lone figure stepped inside.

Not wearing a mask.

Not carrying a rifle.

An elderly man in an immaculate navy suit entered with his hands folded behind his back.

His silver hair was perfectly combed.

His polished shoes made almost no sound against the concrete floor.

Emma frowned.

"I know you..."

The man smiled faintly.

"Not personally."

"But I've known you since the day you were born."

Ethan's face hardened.

"Arthur."

Arthur Langley.

For more than thirty years, he had been legal adviser to the Blackwood family.

He had attended every board meeting.

Every funeral.

Every inheritance hearing.

He was the one man everyone trusted.

And now...

He stood calmly inside the panic room that no outsider was supposed to know existed.

"You betrayed us," Ethan said.

Arthur sighed.

"No."

"I protected this family."

"For decades."

He slowly removed an old leather folder from beneath his arm.

"The truth destroys empires."

Emma stared at him.

"What truth?"

Arthur looked directly into her eyes.

"You believe you've been searching for your father."

"You've been asking the wrong question."

Silence filled the room.

"The real question..."

"...is why someone spent twenty-eight years making sure you never discovered your mother."

Emma's heart pounded.

"My mother?"

Arthur nodded.

"The woman who raised you wasn't the woman who gave birth to you."

The words hit like a freight train.

"No..."

Emma whispered.

"You're lying."

Arthur calmly opened the folder.

Inside were certified hospital records.

Birth certificates.

Adoption documents.

DNA reports.

Every page carried official seals.

Every signature appeared genuine.

Ethan quickly snatched the documents.

His eyes raced across the first page.

Then the second.

The color drained from his face.

"It can't be..."

Arthur looked almost sympathetic.

"It is."

"The fire twenty-eight years ago wasn't an accident."

"It was a cover-up."

Emma's hands shook violently.

"So..."

"Who am I?"

Arthur answered without hesitation.

"You were born Isabella Blackwood."

The room fell completely silent.

Even Ethan stopped breathing.

Arthur continued.

"Jonathan Blackwood ordered your identity erased because someone inside this family wanted every surviving heir dead."

Emma staggered backward until she hit the concrete wall.

Every childhood memory...

Every birthday...

Every school record...

Every photograph...

Everything she believed about herself...

Had been built on a lie.

Before anyone could speak again...

A single gunshot echoed through the corridor.

Arthur looked down.

A dark stain spread across his white shirt.

He had been shot through the back.

He collapsed onto the floor.

With his final breath, he grabbed Emma's wrist.

His voice was barely audible.

"Don't trust..."

Blood filled his mouth.

"...your..."

His eyes froze.

He was dead.

The panic room lights suddenly came back on.

Every security monitor rebooted at once.

One camera showed a black helicopter lifting off from the mansion roof.

Another showed several guards lying unconscious outside.

On the largest screen, a single message appeared in white letters against a black background.
