CHAPTER 7 — The Chairman Finally Stepped Out of the Shadows

Grace barely slept.

The message on the burner phone replayed in her mind over and over.

"Now you're the only witness left."

By sunrise, the news channels had already declared Ethan Caldwell's death a suicide.

His prison cell had supposedly been locked from the inside.

The surveillance cameras had conveniently "malfunctioned" for exactly eleven minutes.

Grace didn't believe a single word.

Neither did Detective Marcus Bennett.

He arrived at her office carrying a thick evidence folder.

"I shouldn't even be showing you this," he admitted, closing the blinds before sitting down.

He spread several photographs across her desk.

Grace's heartbeat quickened.

Every victim had one thing in common.

Successful entrepreneurs.

Found dead after exposing financial fraud.

Each case had been ruled an accident or suicide.

Each investigation had quietly disappeared.

Marcus pointed to a symbol stamped in the corner of every file.

The same symbol Grace had seen on the mysterious photograph.

"The Chairman," Marcus said quietly.

"No one knows his real name."

"No fingerprints."

"No photographs."

"No official records."

"For twenty years he's destroyed anyone who threatened his network."

Grace looked at the final photograph.

It showed her father standing beside several business executives at a charity gala nearly fifteen years earlier.

One face had been scratched out.

Deliberately.

"Can you recover it?" she asked.

Marcus nodded.

"My forensic team already did."

He slid one last photograph toward her.

Grace stared at it in disbelief.

"No..."

Her voice trembled.

"It can't be."

The man smiling beside her father wasn't a stranger.

It was Richard Holloway...

The respected philanthropist who had funded children's hospitals across the country.

The billionaire everyone called "America's kindest businessman."

The same man who had quietly donated millions to Grace's foundation only two months earlier.

The same man who had hugged Sophie and called her "a beautiful little angel."

Marcus looked her straight in the eyes.

"We believe Richard Holloway is The Chairman."

Grace felt the room begin to spin.

"He comforted me after Ethan's arrest."

"He attended my father's funeral."

"He even offered to help rebuild the company."

Marcus nodded grimly.

"That's exactly what predators do."

"They stay close enough to control the damage."

Before Grace could respond, her assistant rushed into the office.

"Ms. Lawson!"

Grace stood immediately.

"What happened?"

"The board members..."

"They've called an emergency vote."

Marcus frowned.

"For what?"

The assistant swallowed hard.

"They're removing you as CEO."

Grace hurried into the executive boardroom.

Every seat was occupied.

Richard Holloway stood calmly at the far end of the polished table, wearing his usual warm smile.

He slowly applauded as Grace entered.

"I've been waiting for you," he said pleasantly.

Then he placed a leather folder in front of every board member.

Inside were forged financial records.

Doctored emails.

Fabricated signatures.

Documents designed to make it appear that Grace had stolen company funds after Ethan's arrest.

Richard folded his hands.

"I'm truly sorry, Grace."

His voice sounded almost compassionate.

"But the board has lost confidence in your leadership."

One by one...

Board members began raising their hands.

Grace looked around the room.

Many couldn't even meet her eyes.

Some looked ashamed.

Others looked terrified.

She finally understood.

They weren't voting because they believed Richard.

They were voting because they were afraid of him.

Richard smiled calmly.

"Checkmate."

Grace slowly reached into her handbag.

Instead of arguing...

She placed a small black voice recorder onto the table.

Then she smiled.

"No, Richard."

"You've just walked into mine."

The tiny red recording light was still blinking.

And every word Richard had spoken over the last ten minutes...

Had already been transmitted live to Detective Marcus Bennett.

Outside the building...

The sound of dozens of police sirens began echoing through the streets.

For the first time in twenty years...

May you like

The Chairman realized the trap had never been for Grace.

It had always been for him.
