CHAPTER 6 — The Greatest Surprise Was Never About Revenge
One year later...
The Carter Community Center opened its doors.
Funded entirely by Viktor Volkov and Rachel Carter, it offered free meals, job training, legal advice, and temporary housing for families who had lost everything.
Hundreds attended the grand opening.
Reporters crowded around Viktor.
"Mr. Volkov, why spend so much helping strangers?"
Viktor smiled.
"Because once, I was the stranger no one wanted."
Another reporter turned to Rachel.
"Do you regret not destroying your ex-husband in court?"
Rachel answered calmly.
"I didn't need to destroy him."
"Life had already done that."
Just then, a familiar figure stepped through the entrance.
Daniel.
He wore inexpensive work clothes covered in paint.
His hands were rough from months of honest labor.
Instead of asking for help...
he carried a toolbox.
"I heard you still needed volunteers."
The room fell silent.
Rachel looked at Viktor.
Viktor nodded with a small smile.
Daniel spent the next several hours repairing broken shelves, fixing doors, and assembling furniture without expecting a single dollar.
When the work was finished, he quietly prepared to leave.
Rachel stopped him.
"You've changed."
Daniel lowered his head.
"I had to lose everything...
before I learned what actually mattered."
Viktor extended his hand.
"We're expanding the center next month."
"We could use a foreman."
Daniel looked up in disbelief.
"You'd trust me?"
Viktor smiled.
"I don't trust the man who sold his house to a homeless stranger."
"I trust the man who spent the last year becoming someone different."
Daniel slowly shook his hand.
For the first time in decades...
he wasn't being given wealth.
He was being given another chance.
And somehow...
