CHAPTER 1 — The Perfect Lie

For fifteen years, everyone believed Emily Carter was the strongest woman in Maplewood.

She worked two jobs.

Raised her son alone.

Never complained.

Whenever neighbors asked about her husband, she smiled sadly.

"He died in a car accident before Noah was born."

People admired her courage.

They brought casseroles.

Teachers treated Noah with sympathy.

Even the local newspaper once called her "The Widow Who Never Gave Up."

Emily never corrected them.

Because the lie was easier than the truth.

Every birthday, Noah stood in front of a framed photograph of a smiling young man in military uniform.

Emily would gently dust the frame.

"Your father loved you before you were even born."

Noah always whispered,

"I hope he's proud of me."

Emily smiled...

Then cried alone every single night.

Only one person knew the truth.

Her elderly mother, Helen.

"You can't keep lying forever," Helen warned.

Emily stared out the window.

"I have no choice."

"You always have a choice."

"No... not after what happened."

Helen sighed.

"What if he comes back?"

Emily laughed bitterly.

"He won't."

"He doesn't even know Noah exists."

The room fell silent.

That sentence carried more pain than fifteen years of pretending.

Because the man in the photograph...

Wasn't dead.

He had never been dead.

Emily had simply erased him from the world.

One rainy afternoon, while cleaning the attic, Noah discovered an old cardboard box.

Inside were dozens of unopened letters.

Every single envelope carried the same handwriting.

Every single envelope was addressed to Emily.

And every return address belonged to one man.

Daniel Brooks.

The same man Emily insisted had died before Noah was born.

Noah's hands trembled.

None of the letters had ever been opened.

He quietly slipped one into his backpack.

That night, after Emily fell asleep...

He finally unfolded the first letter.

"Emily... please tell me if our baby is alive."

Noah stopped breathing.

Before he could finish reading...

Emily appeared behind him.

The color drained from her face.

"Noah..."

He looked up with tears in his eyes.

May you like

"Mom..."

"...who is Daniel Brooks?"
