CHAPTER 7 — The One Letter No One Was Supposed to Read

Life slowly returned to normal.

Daniel and Emily weren't trying to erase the past.

They were trying to build a future.

Every Sunday, the three of them shared dinner together.

Every Friday, Daniel and Noah worked on restoring an old pickup truck in the garage.

For the first time...

It felt like a family.

Then one afternoon, while organizing the last box of old papers, Noah found something hidden beneath the false bottom of the wooden chest.

A sealed envelope.

Unlike the others...

It wasn't addressed to Emily.

It simply read:

"To Noah — Open only if I never find you."

His hands trembled.

The postmark was dated fifteen years earlier.

Daniel stared at the envelope.

"I never knew this one existed."

Slowly...

Noah broke the faded wax seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

"My son..."

"If you're reading this, it means I failed."

"Maybe someone convinced you I abandoned you."

"Maybe you hate me."

"If you do... I understand."

"But there is one thing you must never doubt."

"I searched for you every single day."

"Not because I had to..."

"Because loving you was the easiest thing I've ever done."

Tears rolled down Noah's face.

Then a small photograph slipped from the envelope.

It showed Daniel standing outside the hospital.

Holding a tiny blue teddy bear.

On the back, Daniel had written only six words.

"Waiting to meet my little hero."

Noah broke down completely.

He hugged his father harder than ever before.

But as Emily gathered the remaining papers...

One final document slid onto the floor.

It wasn't a letter.

It was a bank statement.

The account holder's name made everyone's heart stop.

Helen Carter.

The account showed monthly deposits...

From Richard Brooks.

For nearly ten years.

Emily whispered,

"No..."

"My mother accepted his money..."

Daniel looked sick.

May you like

"What if..."

"...she knew much more than she ever admitted?"
