CHAPTER 2 — The Phone Call That Changed Everything

Emily grabbed the letter and ripped it into pieces.
"You were never supposed to see that."
Noah stood frozen.
"You lied to me."
"It isn't that simple."
"Then tell me the truth!"
Emily couldn't.
Because the truth sounded impossible.
Fifteen years earlier...
Daniel hadn't abandoned her.
He had enlisted overseas only weeks before Noah was born.
Before leaving, he promised,
"I'll come home before our son's first birthday."
But during his deployment...
His convoy disappeared after an explosion.
The military mistakenly listed him as missing.
Months later...
Emily received another letter.
It claimed Daniel had started a new life overseas with another woman.
The anonymous letter included photographs.
Emily believed every word.
Heartbroken and humiliated...
She cut all contact.
Every letter Daniel later mailed from military hospitals...
She threw away unopened.
Every attempt he made to call...
She changed her phone number.
Every visit...
He arrived after she had already moved away.
Eventually...
She convinced herself he had chosen another family.
So she told the world he was dead.
It hurt less than admitting she had been abandoned.
Or so she thought.
Then...
The house phone rang.
Emily answered without looking.
"Hello?"
A deep voice answered.
"I've been looking for you for fifteen years."
Emily froze.
The coffee mug slipped from her hand and shattered across the kitchen floor.
"I finally found Noah."
Her knees nearly gave out.
It was him.
Daniel.
May you like
Alive.
And standing less than five miles away.
