CHAPTER 5 — The Secret Vault Beneath the Mansion

The moment Richard was handcuffed, everyone believed the nightmare was finally over.
They were wrong.
As police searched the mansion, the elderly man who had revealed himself as Emily's father walked silently toward the massive fireplace.
"There's something your grandmother never told anyone," he said.
He reached beneath the carved wooden mantel and pressed a hidden brass button.
The entire fireplace rumbled.
Stone scraped against stone.
A secret staircase slowly emerged from the floor.
Every officer reached for their weapons.
Emily followed her father down the narrow steps into the darkness.
At the bottom waited a steel vault unlike anything she'd ever seen.
Above the heavy door were engraved six words:
"Truth Is Worth More Than Fortune."
Her father entered a code.
The vault hissed open.
Inside...
There was no gold.
No diamonds.
No stacks of cash.
Instead, thousands of neatly organized folders lined the walls.
Every folder carried the name of someone powerful.
Judges.
Senators.
CEOs.
Billionaires.
Emily stared in disbelief.
"What is all this?"
Her father sighed.
"For forty years... Eleanor secretly investigated corruption."
He handed Emily a thick black file.
Across the front was written one terrifying name.
RICHARD BLACKWOOD.
Emily opened it.
Inside were photographs, offshore bank records, forged wills, secret recordings... and a signed contract for Eleanor's murder.
Richard hadn't acted alone.
At the bottom of the final page were three signatures.
Richard.
Victoria.
And...
Police Commissioner Daniel Hayes.
Emily's blood ran cold.
