CHAPTER 6 — The Policeman Who Was Never Coming to Save Them

Emily's heart pounded.
"The commissioner..."
Her father nodded grimly.
"Your grandmother trusted no one. That's why she built this vault."
Before they could leave, the lights inside the bunker suddenly went dark.
A metallic voice echoed through hidden speakers.
"Security lockdown activated."
Steel doors slammed shut above them.
Emily grabbed her phone.
No signal.
Someone had sealed the mansion.
Then footsteps echoed from the staircase.
Slow.
Confident.
Commissioner Daniel Hayes appeared, applauding.
"Impressive," he said with a smile.
"You found the vault sooner than expected."
The police officers behind him lowered their weapons.
Not at him.
At Emily.
Every one of them worked for Daniel.
Richard's arrest...
Had only been a distraction.
Daniel stepped inside the vault and calmly closed the steel door behind him.
"You know," he said, "Eleanor was brilliant."
"She collected evidence against half the most powerful people in America."
He smiled.
"So we couldn't let her stay alive."
Emily felt the air leave her lungs.
"You killed her..."
Daniel laughed softly.
"No."
"Richard poisoned her."
"I simply made sure the investigation disappeared."
He reached for the black file.
"Give it to me."
Emily clutched it tighter.
Daniel raised his pistol.
"I'll ask only once."
Before he could fire...
An alarm echoed through the underground chamber.
A computerized voice filled the vault.
"Emergency Protocol Blackwood activated."
Every screen on the walls suddenly lit up.
Dozens of live news broadcasts appeared simultaneously.
Then Emily realized the impossible.
The vault had automatically uploaded every secret file...
To every major television network.
Daniel stared at the screens in horror.
His face turned white.
"No..."
The broadcasters began reading the breaking news live.
"Explosive corruption scandal involving senior government officials..."
Daniel dropped his gun.
Outside the mansion, helicopters filled the sky.
Federal agents surrounded the estate.
Emily looked at her father's trembling smile.
He whispered one sentence that Eleanor had planned decades earlier:
"The safest place to hide the truth... was where the guilty would come looking for it."
And somewhere beyond the mansion gates, another black SUV rolled to a stop.
A woman stepped out, holding an old photograph of Emily as a baby.
When Emily saw her face through the rain...
She whispered in disbelief.
"Mom...?"
May you like
But the woman had supposedly died...
Twenty-three years ago.
