CHAPTER 1 – The Box Hidden Above the Ceiling

Margaret Holloway never planned to climb into the attic that morning.

At seventy-eight years old, every step up the creaking ladder made her knees ache, but the old farmhouse had to be emptied before it was sold. Her children had insisted.

"Mom, it's just junk," they told her.

"Dad wouldn't want you living in the past."

But memories don't disappear simply because someone calls them junk.

Dust floated through beams of sunlight as Margaret pushed aside decades-old cardboard boxes. Christmas ornaments. Baby clothes. Tax papers. Letters tied with faded ribbon.

Then she noticed one box she'd never seen before.

Across the front, in shaky handwriting, were two words.

OLD MEMORIES

Her heartbeat slowed.

She couldn't remember packing it.

She lifted the lid.

Inside lay an old wool blanket, several yellowed photographs, and a tiny wooden jewelry box.

Beneath everything else rested a flip phone.

Not a modern smartphone.

An ancient silver flip phone covered in dust.

Margaret frowned.

She was certain she'd never owned one like it.

Curiosity won.

She pressed the power button.

Nothing.

Dead.

Then, as she turned it over in her trembling hands...

The screen suddenly flickered.

One percent battery.

No SIM card.

No signal.

Yet somehow...

The phone began to ring.

The ringtone echoed through the silent attic.

Margaret froze.

Her hands shook so violently she almost dropped it.

The caller ID displayed only one word.

HOME

Confused and terrified, she answered.

For several seconds...

Only breathing.

Then a man's voice whispered.

A voice she hadn't heard in twenty-seven years.

"Margaret..."

She stopped breathing.

It couldn't be.

Her husband Daniel had died in a boating accident.

She had buried him herself.

The voice continued.

"If you're hearing this... don't let them sell the house."

Then the line went dead.

Margaret stared at the silent phone.

Outside, her son pulled into the driveway with a real estate agent.

May you like

Neither of them knew...

The dead had just called.
