CHAPTER 6 – The Man Buried Without a Grave

At sunrise, Margaret and Michael drove three hours to the abandoned care facility.

The building had officially closed eighteen years earlier.

Broken windows.

Rusted gates.

Overgrown weeds swallowed the parking lot.

According to public records...

No patients had ever lived there.

Yet Daniel's handwritten map led directly to Room 214.

The room was empty.

Except for an old hospital bed.

A cracked wheelchair.

And a locked steel cabinet.

Michael forced it open.

Inside were hundreds of patient files.

Every file had been destroyed...

Except one.

Patient Name: Daniel Holloway

Status: Transferred.

No destination.

No signature.

Only a date.

Three days ago.

Margaret's legs gave out.

"Three... days ago?"

Someone had been keeping Daniel alive all these years.

Someone had moved him just before they arrived.

Suddenly...

A nurse's voice echoed from behind them.

"I knew someone would come."

An elderly woman stepped from the shadows.

"I've waited twenty-seven years to tell the truth."

She handed Margaret an old photograph.

It showed Daniel sitting in a wheelchair.

Older.

Gray-haired.

But unmistakably alive.

Standing beside him...

Was Richard.

Smiling.

And beside Richard...

Was a woman Margaret had never seen before.

The nurse pointed to her.

"She wasn't Richard's wife."

Margaret frowned.

"Then who is she?"

The nurse's eyes filled with tears.

"She's Daniel's second wife."

Silence filled the room.

Then came the final blow.

"And the little girl holding his hand..."

The nurse swallowed hard.

"...is your husband's daughter."

Margaret's world shattered.

For twenty-seven years, she believed she had lost her husband.

Instead...

May you like

He had built an entirely new family while the whole world believed he was dead.
