CHAPTER 3 – The Child Who Shouldn’t Exist

Emily followed the address Sarah sent her.
It led to a small blue house at the edge of town.
A little girl stood on the porch holding a stuffed rabbit, her eyes wide and frightened.
Sarah opened the door behind her.
“You came,” Sarah whispered.
Emily looked at the child.
Same hazel eyes.
Same birthmark near the wrist.
The exact same birthmark Emily had.
Her blood ran cold.
“What is going on?” Emily demanded.
Sarah’s face turned pale.
“Ethan didn’t abandon my daughter,” she said. “He was paid to lie.”
Emily staggered back.
“Paid by who?”
Sarah slowly handed her another photo.
It showed Emily’s mother standing outside a hospital nursery twenty-five years ago... holding a newborn that wasn’t hers.
Then Sarah whispered the name that shattered Emily’s world.
“Your mother.”
Emily shook her head. “No. That’s impossible.”
But deep down, something broke.
Because suddenly she remembered every strange thing from childhood.
Her mother refusing DNA tests.
Her father never looking directly at her.
The locked drawer in the study.
And the nurse who once cried when she saw Emily at age ten.
That night, Emily returned home.
Her wedding dress was still stained with dirt.
Her mother stood in the living room, calm as stone.
“You met Sarah,” she said.
Emily’s voice cracked.
“You knew.”
Her mother smiled faintly.
“I saved this family.”
Emily whispered, “By stealing someone’s baby?”
May you like
Her mother stepped closer.
“No, Emily. By stealing you back.”
