CHAPTER 5 – The Father Who Was Never Dead

Emily couldn’t stop staring at the adoption papers.
Lily Carter.
The name felt completely foreign, yet somehow painfully familiar.
For twenty-five years she had believed she was Emily Harper—the cherished daughter of one of the wealthiest families in the state. Every birthday, every family portrait, every memory suddenly felt like part of someone else's life.
She looked at Ethan, tears streaming down her face.
"You knew... and you still asked me to marry you?"
Ethan nodded slowly.
"I found out a year ago. Your mother paid me five million dollars to stay silent until after the wedding."
Emily's heart shattered.
"You accepted the money?"
"I did..."
He lowered his head.
"...because I thought I could expose her from the inside."
Emily wanted to believe him.
But trust had become impossible.
Suddenly, Sarah burst through the front door, breathing heavily.
"Emily! We have to leave. Right now!"
Before anyone could react, three black SUVs screeched into the driveway.
Men in dark suits surrounded the mansion.
One of them stepped forward.
"The Harper family has twenty-four hours to surrender all hospital records."
Emily's mother turned pale.
"They found us..."
Another man walked out of the last SUV.
Gray hair.
Weathered face.
Sharp blue eyes.
The moment Emily saw him...
Something inside her froze.
The stranger whispered only two words.
"My daughter."
Emily's legs gave out.
The man slowly removed an old silver necklace from around his neck.
Half of a broken heart pendant.
Without thinking, Emily reached beneath her dress.
She wore the other half.
Neither of them had known the other possessed it.
The stranger's voice trembled.
"I've been searching for you... for twenty-five years."
Emily stared at him in disbelief.
"My father..."
The man nodded with tears in his eyes.
"I never stopped looking."
But before father and daughter could embrace...
May you like
A gunshot echoed across the driveway.
The old man collapsed.
