CHAPTER 1 — "The River Chose Its Victim... But She Refused to Let It Die."

The first thing Olivia Carter heard wasn't the roar of the river.

It was a cry.

Not loud.

Not human.

A tiny, desperate sound that somehow cut through the thunder of rushing water.

She spun toward the swollen river just as something golden disappeared beneath the muddy surface.

Then it surfaced again.

A lion cub.

No more than a few months old.

Its tiny paws clawed helplessly at the current while its terrified eyes searched for something... or someone... that wasn't there.

"Oh my God..." Olivia whispered.

The tourists around her gasped.

Someone pulled out a phone.

Someone else screamed for the safari guide.

But no one moved.

The river was a monster after the night's storm.

Entire trees were being swept downstream.

The water slammed against hidden rocks with enough force to shatter bones.

The guide raised both hands.

"Nobody goes in! That river will kill you!"

Olivia barely heard him.

Years earlier, she'd volunteered at a wildlife rehabilitation center, nursing injured foxes, wolves, and abandoned lion cubs rescued from illegal trafficking.

She knew that cry.

It wasn't just fear.

It was the sound of an animal giving up.

Without another word, she threw off her jacket.

"Olivia! Stop!" one tourist shouted.

But she was already running.

Three long strides.

One deep breath.

Then—

SPLASH.

The freezing water swallowed her instantly.

The current slammed into her like a speeding truck.

She couldn't even see the bottom.

Branches struck her shoulders.

Mud filled her mouth.

For one terrifying second she wondered if she had just made the biggest mistake of her life.

Then she saw the cub.

Only a few feet away.

Its tiny head vanished beneath the water again.

"No!"

Olivia lunged forward.

The current dragged both of them downstream.

She grabbed at nothing.

Again.

Missed.

Again.

Her fingertips finally caught a soaked tuft of golden fur.

"I've got you..."

The cub barely reacted.

Its body felt frighteningly limp.

She cradled it against her chest while struggling toward the shore.

Every step felt impossible.

The river fought for every inch.

Several times she slipped completely underwater.

The tourists screamed.

The guide grabbed a rescue rope.

"Throw it!"

The rope landed only inches away.

Olivia reached...

Missed.

Reached again...

Caught it.

Five people pulled with everything they had.

Slowly...

Painfully...

They dragged her toward the muddy bank.

The moment she collapsed onto solid ground, everyone rushed forward.

"Is it breathing?"

A veterinarian traveling with the tour dropped beside her.

He gently examined the cub.

His expression darkened.

"Very weak..."

Olivia refused to let go.

She rubbed the tiny animal with her jacket, trying to warm it.

"Come on..."

The cub coughed.

A little water spilled from its mouth.

Then...

A tiny heartbeat.

The group burst into relieved applause.

Olivia smiled through exhausted tears.

"We did it..."

But the celebration lasted less than three seconds.

The safari guide suddenly turned pale.

His binoculars slipped from his hands.

"No..."

Everyone followed his terrified stare.

Across the river...

Tall grass began moving.

Not because of the wind.

Because something enormous was walking through it.

Then another shadow appeared.

Then another.

Golden eyes.

Silent.

Watching.

One lioness stepped into view.

Then a second.

Then three more.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody breathed.

Finally...

The grass parted one last time.

An enormous black-maned male lion emerged.

His scarred face made him look like a king carved from stone.

He wasn't running.

He wasn't roaring.

He was walking.

Straight toward Olivia.

The guide's voice shook.

"Nobody move."

The alpha reached the riverbank.

Twenty feet away.

Ten.

Five.

Olivia looked down at the tiny cub trembling in her arms.

One horrifying thought flooded her mind.

"They think I kidnapped their baby."

The cub suddenly opened its eyes...

And let out one tiny cry.

Every lion in the pride froze.

The alpha slowly lifted his head.

Then took one final step toward the woman.

No one on shore dared blink.

Because they were certain they were about to witness a fatal attack.

Instead...

The giant lion lowered his head until his nose was only inches from Olivia's trembling hand...

May you like

And quietly inhaled.

The entire world seemed to stop.
