CHAPTER 7 — Six Months Later... The Lion Returned With Something No One Expected

Six months passed.

The story spread across the world.

The dramatic footage of a young woman standing unarmed between a wounded lion and a gang of armed poachers was broadcast by every major news network.

People called Olivia Carter a hero.

She rejected every interview.

"I didn't save a legend," she always said.

"I saved a baby."

Instead of chasing fame, she accepted a position at the wildlife reserve where everything had happened.

Every morning she drove through the savannah before sunrise, checking camera traps, monitoring rescued animals, and helping orphaned cubs learn to survive in the wild.

The rescued lion cub had grown quickly.

The rangers named him Kito, meaning precious child.

Although Kito had been reunited with his pride, he occasionally appeared on distant camera traps, always healthy, always surrounded by the lionesses that had protected him after the battle.

One afternoon, Olivia was inspecting a damaged fence near the river where it had all begun.

The sky darkened.

Rain clouds gathered.

The same river that had nearly claimed Kito months earlier was beginning to rise again.

She smiled sadly.

"It's hard to believe this is where we first met."

Suddenly...

Every bird in the area exploded into the air.

The zebras bolted.

Even the elephants became restless.

Senior Ranger Daniel frowned.

"Something's wrong."

Then they heard it.

A roar.

Not one.

Several.

The pride burst from the tall grass at full speed.

The rangers instinctively reached for their rifles.

But Olivia lifted her hand.

"Wait."

Leading the pride was Kito.

No longer the frightened cub she had pulled from the river.

He had nearly doubled in size.

His mane had just begun to darken around his neck.

Yet he wasn't charging at the humans.

He was looking directly at Olivia.

Then he turned.

Ran a few yards.

Stopped.

Looked back.

Roared.

Again.

And again.

"It's almost like..."

Daniel whispered.

"...he wants us to follow him."

No one in the reserve had ever witnessed wild lions intentionally leading humans anywhere.

Olivia made a decision.

"We're going."

The pride ran.

The rangers followed in their vehicles.

After nearly fifteen minutes, Kito stopped beside a dry ravine.

The smell hit them instantly.

Smoke.

Diesel fuel.

Blood.

Olivia climbed down carefully.

Hidden beneath camouflage netting was an illegal camp.

But the poachers were gone.

What remained made everyone's blood run cold.

Metal cages.

Chains.

Animal traps.

Stacks of lion skins.

And...

A terrified little girl.

She couldn't have been older than eight.

She was tied inside one of the cages, crying silently.

The child looked up as Olivia approached.

"You came..."

she whispered.

"I knew the lions would bring someone."

Olivia immediately cut the ropes.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Amina."

"My father worked for the poachers."

"When I tried to free the baby animals..."

"They locked me here."

The rangers searched the camp.

Then Daniel shouted.

"Olivia!"

She hurried over.

Inside the largest tent lay dozens of files, maps, passports, satellite phones, and financial records.

Daniel's face turned pale.

"This isn't just one gang."

"It's an international trafficking network."

At the bottom of the pile was a sealed envelope.

Across the front, in red letters, were six chilling words.

ELIMINATE THE WOMAN WHO SAVED HIM.

Olivia froze.

May you like

The rescue hadn't ended the nightmare.

It had only exposed something far bigger.
