CHAPTER 5 — The Explosion Uncovered a Secret Buried for Twenty Years

The explosion ripped through the forest like thunder.
The ground beneath everyone's feet trembled.
A flock of birds burst into the sky.
Smoke rolled above the trees.
For one terrifying second, nobody knew what had exploded.
Then another sound echoed through the reserve.
The cries of animals.
Hundreds of them.
Elephants trumpeted in panic.
Antelope scattered across the plains.
Monkeys leaped wildly through the treetops.
"It's a trap!" one ranger shouted.
The poachers hadn't detonated a bomb to kill people.
They had destroyed the only bridge connecting the eastern side of the reserve to the ranger headquarters.
No reinforcements could reach them now.
The leader of the Black Fang Gang laughed.
"Now we're all alone."
The rescue helicopter circled overhead, but thick black smoke rose into the sky, making it impossible to land safely.
The pilot's voice crackled over the loudspeaker.
"We can't touch down! Visibility is gone!"
The poachers seized the opportunity.
Two men sprinted toward the lion cub while the others fired wildly to keep the rangers pinned behind the vehicles.
"No!" Olivia screamed.
The exhausted cub tried to stand beside its mother but collapsed after only two steps.
It was still too weak from the river.
The lioness immediately placed herself between the cub and the armed men.
She roared with such fury that the nearest poacher hesitated.
But only for a second.
He raised a tranquilizer rifle.
Pfft!
The dart buried itself deep in the lioness's shoulder.
She staggered.
Another dart struck her neck.
Within moments, the protective mother collapsed beside her cub.
"The sedative!" a ranger shouted.
"They're trying to steal the cub alive!"
The tiny lion cried desperately, nudging its unconscious mother with its nose.
Olivia's heart shattered.
Without thinking, she sprinted toward them.
A poacher grabbed the cub by its front legs.
The terrified animal screamed.
"Let him go!" Olivia shouted.
The man laughed.
"You have no idea what this little beast is worth."
Then he ripped a leather collar from beneath the cub's wet fur.
The collar had remained hidden until now.
Mud fell away, revealing an old brass tag engraved with unfamiliar symbols.
The poacher's eyes widened.
"So it's true..."
"It's really him."
Olivia frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
The leader walked over slowly, almost reverently.
"You don't recognize that collar?"
She shook her head.
He smiled.
"This cub isn't ordinary."
"He is the last surviving descendant of the legendary Black Mane bloodline."
The rangers stared in disbelief.
Even the senior guide looked stunned.
The poacher continued proudly.
"For decades, wealthy collectors have searched for this family of lions."
"Not because they're beautiful."
"Because every alpha born from this bloodline grows enormous... fearless... and impossible to dominate."
"Their cubs sell for millions on the black market."
Olivia looked at the trembling little lion.
To her, he wasn't worth millions.
He was simply a frightened baby who had almost drowned.
She stepped forward.
"I don't care how much money he's worth."
"You're not taking him."
The poacher smiled coldly.
"We'll see."
He raised his weapon—
Then suddenly froze.
Behind Olivia...
A deep growl rolled across the riverbank.
The wounded alpha had risen.
Despite the bullet lodged in his shoulder...
Despite the blood soaking his magnificent mane...
He was standing again.
Every member of the pride slowly stood beside him.

Not one lion retreated.
The king was preparing for one final battle.
