CHAPTER 1 – "She Didn't Even Scream..."

The sound of a wheelchair crashing down a marble staircase echoed through the entire school.
One...
Two...
Three violent impacts.
Then silence.
Students froze in the hallway.
Teachers dropped their coffee.
Someone screamed.
At the top of the stairs stood Madison Harper—the richest, most feared senior at Brookstone Academy.
She calmly brushed imaginary dust from her designer blazer.
"Oh my God..."
"I think she pushed her."
"No... she couldn't..."
Madison smiled.
"I barely touched her."
At the bottom of the staircase, seventeen-year-old Lily Carter lay twisted beside her overturned wheelchair.
Blood slowly trickled from her forehead.
One arm was bent at an unnatural angle.
Yet the first thing Lily did wasn't cry.
She searched frantically for a small worn backpack that had flown several feet away.
"No..."
Her trembling voice barely escaped her lips.
"My bag..."
"My bag..."
A janitor hurried over and handed it to her.
Lily hugged it against her chest tighter than her own broken arm.
Only then did tears finally appear.
Not because she was hurt.
Because she had almost lost what was inside.
Principal Howard rushed into the hallway.
"What happened?"
Before anyone could answer, Madison folded her arms.
"She lost control of her wheelchair."
Several of her wealthy friends immediately nodded.
"Yeah."
"It was an accident."
"We all saw it."
Lily slowly raised her head.
Their eyes met.
Everyone expected her to expose Madison.
Instead...
She quietly whispered,
"It... wasn't an accident."
The hallway exploded with murmurs.
Madison's smile disappeared.
"Are you calling me a liar?"
Lily remained silent.
The security cameras overlooking the staircase had been broken for almost a week.
There was no evidence.
Only witnesses.
And every witness was terrified of Madison's powerful family.
Principal Howard sighed heavily.
"We'll investigate."
Madison leaned close enough for only Lily to hear.
"You should've stayed in that wheelchair where people pitied you."
Her voice became colder.
"No one is going to believe a cripple over me."
Lily looked down.
She had heard those words before.
Years ago.
From someone else.
Someone whose voice sounded frighteningly familiar.
Before she could think about it, the school nurse arrived.
As they lifted Lily onto a stretcher, the backpack slipped open.
A faded photograph slid across the floor.
A little girl.
A smiling woman.
And a firefighter wearing a medal.
Madison accidentally glanced at the picture.
Her entire face changed.
For less than one second.
Fear.
Real fear.
She immediately kicked the photo beneath a locker before anyone else noticed.
"What are you doing?" one student asked.
"Nothing."
But Lily saw it.
She saw Madison hiding the photograph.
And for the first time...
Lily looked afraid.
Not of the fall.
Not of the pain.
But of what Madison had just recognized.
The ambulance doors slammed shut.
Rain began falling.
As the paramedics examined Lily, one of them frowned.
"This scar..."
He carefully pulled back the sleeve on Lily's arm.
There, hidden beneath years of faded skin...
was an identical butterfly-shaped birthmark he had seen once before.
Nearly sixteen years ago.
On another little girl.
One everyone believed had died.
Meanwhile...
Madison hurried into the girls' restroom.
She locked every stall.
Her hands shook violently.
She dialed a number.
The call connected instantly.
"Mom..."
Her voice cracked.
"I think..."
"I think she's still alive."
Silence.
Then a terrified whisper answered.
"Impossible."
Madison swallowed hard.
"I saw the picture."
Another pause.
Then the woman said four chilling words.
"Destroy it this time."
Madison slowly lowered the phone.
Outside the restroom door...
May you like
Someone had heard everything.
And that person quietly pressed RECORD.
