CHAPTER 3 – The Sister Who Was Taught to Hate

Lily’s words shattered the hospital room.
“She saved me too… once.”
The detective leaned closer.
“Lily, what do you remember?”
At first, she could barely speak.
Her head throbbed. Her wrist burned beneath the cast. But the memory was worse than the pain.
“I remember smoke,” Lily whispered. “A hallway. I couldn’t breathe. There was another girl holding my hand.”
The old housekeeper covered her mouth.
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“She kept screaming, ‘Don’t let go.’”
The detective placed Madison’s school photo beside Lily’s hospital bed.
Blonde hair.
Sharp eyes.
Perfect smile.
Cruel face.
Lily stared at it for a long time.
Then her voice broke.
“That was her.”
At that exact moment, the hospital room door opened.
Madison Harper stood there.
Her makeup was ruined from crying.
For the first time in her life, she didn’t look powerful.
She looked terrified.
“My mother lied,” Madison whispered.
Everyone turned toward her.
“She told me you ruined our family.”
Lily’s heart stopped.
Madison stepped inside slowly.
“She told me the firefighter chose you over me. She said because of you, my real father died.”
The room went silent.
Lily shook her head.
“No…”
Madison’s lips trembled.
“She made me hate a dead girl my whole life.”
Then she looked at Lily’s broken body.
And finally understood.

The dead girl had been alive.
And Madison had just tried to destroy her.
