CHAPTER 4 – The Truth at the Top of the Stairs

The next morning, Brookstone Academy was surrounded by police cars.
Students whispered as officers walked through the hallway.
Madison’s mother, Evelyn Harper, arrived in a white designer coat, smiling like nothing could touch her.
“My daughter is innocent,” she said coldly.
Then Detective Cole played the recording.
“Destroy it this time.”
Evelyn’s smile disappeared.
But she still didn’t panic.
“That could mean anything.”
Then the janitor stepped forward.
His hands shook as he held up a small flash drive.
“The cameras weren’t broken,” he said. “Mrs. Harper paid me to say they were.”
Gasps exploded through the hallway.
The footage played on the school’s large screen.
Madison was seen arguing with Lily.
Then Madison shoved her.
Hard.
The entire school watched Lily fall.
Madison covered her mouth, sobbing.
But Detective Cole wasn’t finished.
He opened another file.
Sixteen years earlier, Evelyn had adopted Madison after the fire.
But Lily had also survived.
Evelyn had hidden the second child because the firefighter’s inheritance was meant to be split between both girls.
Lily wasn’t abandoned.
She was erased.
Evelyn had stolen her name, her family, and her future.
Lily looked at Madison.
Madison looked back, shaking.
Then Lily whispered,
“You didn’t hate me because you were cruel.”
Madison cried harder.
“You hated me because someone taught you to.”
Police officers stepped toward Evelyn.
For the first time, the powerful woman lost control.
“She was supposed to stay gone!” Evelyn screamed.
The hallway froze.
And Madison finally understood the worst truth.
Her mother had not saved her.
Her mother had used her.
As Evelyn was arrested, Madison walked to Lily’s wheelchair and knelt in front of her.
“I pushed you down those stairs,” Madison cried. “But when we were little… I pulled you out of the fire.”
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
Madison reached for her hand.
“I don’t deserve forgiveness.”
Lily looked at her sister for a long moment.
Then whispered,
“No.”
Madison lowered her head.
But Lily squeezed her hand.
“You don’t deserve to keep living her lie either.”
And for the first time since the fire…
May you like
the two sisters cried together.
To be continued…
