CHAPTER 2 — THE BUTTERFLY THAT SHOULD NEVER HAVE EXISTED

Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Even the musicians remained frozen, instruments hanging uselessly in their hands.
Chloe stared at the small gift as though it might explode.
Emily stood quietly before her, one swollen cheek turning deep crimson where Chloe had struck her.
The contrast was unbearable.
One sister wore diamonds.
The other wore borrowed shoes.
One had spent twenty-three birthdays surrounded by luxury.
The other had spent them serving strangers.
"Open it," Emily repeated softly.
Chloe's fingers refused to cooperate.
For the first time in years...
The woman known for controlling boardrooms, investors, and politicians couldn't even untie a ribbon.
Finally...
She ripped the paper away.
Inside lay a faded velvet box.
Old.
Worn.
Its edges had nearly fallen apart.
Someone had clearly opened it hundreds of times.
Chloe slowly lifted the lid.
Inside rested half of an antique gold butterfly necklace.
The room gasped.
Every guest instinctively looked toward Chloe's neck.
Because hanging against her skin...
Hidden beneath layers of diamonds...
Was the other half.
The two broken wings matched perfectly.
Not similar.
Not inspired by.
Perfect.
Like they had once been a single piece.
Emily smiled sadly.
"Mom told me..."
"...that when the butterfly became whole again..."
"...her daughters would finally find each other."
The room erupted.
"What is happening?"
"Is this real?"
"Twins?"
"An affair?"
Phones appeared everywhere.
People started recording.
Chloe's breathing became uneven.
"No."
She shook her head violently.
"This necklace belonged to my mother."
"My father said it was one of a kind."
Emily looked at her quietly.
"He lied."
A deep voice interrupted.
"Enough."
Everyone turned.
At the top of the grand staircase stood Richard Lancaster.
Seventy-two.
Founder of Lancaster Holdings.
The billionaire patriarch.
The man whose approval everyone in the room feared more than bankruptcy.
His face had gone pale.
Not because of the necklace.
Because of Emily.
He descended the staircase slowly.
Each step sounded heavier than the last.
When he reached the ballroom floor...
He stopped only a few feet away from her.
His hands trembled.
Emily offered him a gentle smile.
"Hello..."
"...Grandpa."
Richard closed his eyes.
For a long moment...
No one spoke.
Then, to everyone's astonishment...
The powerful old billionaire whispered only three words.
"I failed you."
The ballroom exploded into chaos.
Chloe stared at her grandfather.
"You know her?"
Richard never looked away from Emily.
"I've known..."
"...every day of her life."
The words landed like thunder.
Chloe stepped backward.
"What?"
Richard swallowed painfully.
"I've paid every hospital bill."
"Every school tuition."
"Every rent payment."
"Every anonymous scholarship."
Emily nodded.
"I know."
"I always wondered why an unknown donor kept saving us."
Richard's eyes filled with tears.
"Because it was the only thing I could do after I lost the courage to tell the truth."
Chloe's entire world began collapsing.
"You mean..."
"You knew?"
"For twenty-three years?"
He nodded once.
"Yes."
Her voice became a scream.
"And Dad?"
Richard remained silent.
That silence answered everything.
Emily slowly reached into her worn handbag again.
"I didn't come only with the necklace."
"I brought something else."
She placed a thick yellow envelope onto the birthday table.
The handwriting across the front made Richard's knees buckle.
He recognized it instantly.
His daughter's handwriting.
Chloe did too.
Impossible.
Her mother had died shortly after giving birth.
Or so everyone had been told.
Emily slid the envelope toward Chloe.
"It wasn't supposed to be opened until both daughters turned twenty-nine."
"The lawyer finally found me last month."
Chloe stared at the faded ink.
One sentence was written across the front.
To my daughters... if this letter is ever opened, it means your father has lied to you for far too long.
Richard suddenly shouted—
"Don't!"
But it was already too late.
Chloe broke the wax seal.
The first page unfolded.
A photograph slipped onto the marble floor.
It showed two newborn baby girls...
Alive.
Healthy.
Wrapped together in the same hospital blanket.
On the back...
Someone had written five chilling words.
"He sold one of them."
The room fell into stunned silence.
Chloe slowly lifted her eyes toward the only man still standing.
Her father had just walked into the ballroom.
And from the expression on his face...
May you like
He knew the nightmare was only beginning.
