CHAPTER 7 — THE MAN WHO STOLE AN EMPIRE… AND THE CHILD WHO COULD DESTROY IT

The ballroom fell into absolute silence.

Even the television reporters who had rushed into the room stopped speaking.

Every camera turned toward the elegant old man standing between two federal agents.

William Lancaster.

The forgotten brother.

The man whose name had disappeared from every Lancaster history book twenty-five years earlier.

He wasn't trembling.

He wasn't ashamed.

He smiled.

A slow, satisfied smile that made the room colder.

"So..."

William said calmly, looking around the ballroom.

"We're finally telling stories tonight."

Richard stared at his older brother as though seeing a ghost.

"You were supposed to be in Switzerland."

William chuckled.

"I let everyone believe that."

Victor's face darkened.

"You ruined our family."

William looked almost amused.

"No."

"You people ruined yourselves."

Emily couldn't take her eyes off him.

Something about his voice...

About the way he looked at her...

Made her stomach tighten.

Rebecca Hayes stepped forward.

"William Lancaster."

"You're under arrest for conspiracy, witness intimidation, attempted murder, identity fraud, financial crimes, and kidnapping."

William laughed.

"You came all this way with nothing but old accusations?"

Rebecca smiled.

"We came with evidence."

She nodded toward another investigator.

A massive screen lit up once again.

This time...

It wasn't an old hospital video.

It was a collection of financial records.

Secret bank accounts.

Offshore transfers.

Property deeds.

Each one linked to shell companies that all traced back to a single source.

William Lancaster.

The guests gasped.

One by one...

Amounts appeared on the screen.

$8 million.

$14 million.

$32 million.

Payments stretching back twenty-three years.

Emily frowned.

"What is all this?"

Rebecca answered quietly.

"The money wasn't to hide you."

"It was to find you."

The room froze.

William's smile disappeared for the first time.

Rebecca continued.

"He paid private investigators across six states."

"He hired former police officers."

"He bribed hospital employees."

"He spent more than sixty million dollars searching for one child."

Emily's voice barely escaped.

"Me?"

Rebecca nodded.

"Yes."

Everyone looked at William.

Chloe whispered,

"Why?"

William slowly exhaled.

"Because she never should have survived."

The ballroom erupted.

Emily instinctively stepped backward.

William didn't even blink.

"If Eleanor had done her job properly..."

"...none of this would've happened."

Her mother screamed,

"She was a BABY!"

William shrugged.

"A dangerous one."

Richard slammed both hands onto the birthday table.

"What are you talking about?"

William looked directly at him.

"You still don't understand..."

"...do you?"

He turned toward Emily.

"You've spent your whole life believing you were simply an unwanted child."

"You weren't."

Emily's heartbeat thundered inside her ears.

"What do you mean?"

William smiled again.

Then he spoke the sentence that changed everything.

"Your biological father wasn't a poor young man."

"He wasn't a mistake."

"He was the legal owner of Lancaster Holdings."

The ballroom exploded.

Richard staggered backward.

"No..."

William nodded.

"Oh, yes."

"Before you became chairman..."

"Our father secretly changed his will."

"He transferred fifty-one percent of Lancaster Holdings..."

"...to a man named Daniel Carter."

Emily gasped.

"Carter..."

"My last name..."

William smiled.

"Exactly."

"Daniel Carter."

"Your real father."

Chloe looked at Emily in disbelief.

"Then..."

William finished the sentence for her.

"If Emily had remained alive and been identified..."

"Every share..."

"Every mansion..."

"Every factory..."

"Every dollar the Lancaster family owns..."

"...would have legally belonged to her."

The room was stunned.

Victor whispered,

"My God..."

Richard's hands began shaking uncontrollably.

"So that's why..."

William nodded.

"Yes."

"I couldn't allow a waitress..."

"...to inherit a billion-dollar empire."

Emily stared at him, unable to breathe.

"You destroyed my life..."

"For money?"

William looked almost offended.

"No."

"For power."

Then Rebecca quietly interrupted.

"Unfortunately for you..."

"...there's one problem."

William frowned.

Rebecca smiled.

"Daniel Carter isn't dead."

Every person in the ballroom stopped breathing.

Emily slowly turned toward Rebecca.

"My father..."

Rebecca nodded.

"He's alive."

"He has spent twenty-three years looking for his daughter."

Before Emily could even process the words...

The ballroom doors opened one final time.

A tall man in his early fifties walked inside.

His gray suit was simple.

His face carried deep lines carved by grief.

Around his neck...

Hung the missing chain that perfectly matched the butterfly pendant Emily had carried since childhood.

He looked directly at Emily.

His eyes filled with tears.

Then, in a voice that trembled with twenty-three years of regret, he whispered,

"I've finally found you..."

May you like

"...my little butterfly."
