CHAPTER 5 — THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

For three long seconds…

No one moved.

The elderly woman stood quietly beneath the glittering crystal chandeliers, dressed in a simple navy coat that looked painfully out of place among the designer gowns and tailored tuxedos.

Her silver hair was pulled neatly behind her ears.

Her hands trembled.

Not from age.

From fear.

Fear that after twenty-three years…

Her daughters might refuse to recognize her.

Chloe stared at her as if she had seen a ghost.

"No..."

She whispered.

"My mother is dead."

The woman smiled sadly.

"That's what your father wanted you to believe."

Emily couldn't breathe.

She had imagined this moment thousands of times.

She had pictured anger.

Questions.

Even silence.

But not this.

Not seeing the woman whose face had stared back at her every morning from an old photograph hidden beneath her grandmother's mattress.

"Mama..."

The word escaped Emily's lips before she could stop it.

The woman broke.

She rushed forward, tears streaming down her face, and wrapped both daughters in her arms.

For a brief moment...

The ballroom disappeared.

There were no billionaires.

No reporters.

No politicians.

Only a mother who had spent twenty-three birthdays wondering whether her children were still alive.

"I'm so sorry," she sobbed.

"I'm so... so sorry."

Chloe stood stiffly.

Her body refused to respond.

She wanted to hug her.

She wanted to push her away.

She wanted answers.

Instead, she asked the only question that mattered.

"Why didn't you come back?"

The woman's smile disappeared.

"I did."

Silence.

"I came back six months after your father took Emily."

Victor lowered his head.

"I returned to the mansion."

"I begged to see you."

"I begged Richard to help me."

Richard closed his eyes.

"I wasn't there."

She nodded.

"Victor told everyone I had suffered a mental breakdown after childbirth."

"He had doctors declare me unstable."

Gasps rippled through the ballroom.

"He convinced the court I was delusional."

"I kept telling everyone I had twins."

"But every document said only one baby had been born."

She looked at Chloe.

"They called me insane."

"They locked me inside Ashcroft Recovery Center."

"For eleven years."

The room erupted.

"What?"

"No..."

Emily's tears fell freely.

"They imprisoned you?"

The woman nodded.

"Not with chains."

"With paperwork."

"Every appeal disappeared."

"Every lawyer suddenly withdrew."

"Every doctor wrote the same sentence."

'Patient suffers persistent maternal hallucinations.'

Victor whispered,

"I thought it would protect everyone."

The woman turned toward him.

"You stole my child."

"You stole my life."

"You stole twenty-three birthdays."

"And you still call it protection?"

No one defended him.

No one could.

At that moment, the ballroom doors burst open.

Several men and women wearing dark blue jackets entered with badges around their necks.

Leading them was a sharp-eyed woman in her forties.

She held a warrant.

"Victor Lancaster?"

He slowly turned.

"I'm Special Investigator Rebecca Hayes."

"We're here on behalf of the State Attorney's Office."

She glanced around the room.

"We've obtained new evidence regarding fraud, unlawful institutionalization, child trafficking, and financial crimes."

The word child trafficking exploded through the ballroom like dynamite.

Victor's knees nearly gave way.

Rebecca continued,

"We also have reason to believe the Lancaster Foundation has been used to conceal illegal payments for over two decades."

Every camera in the room immediately pointed toward Victor.

His empire was beginning to collapse...

Live.

Then Rebecca looked toward Emily.

"Miss Carter..."

"We've also located someone who has been asking to meet you."

Emily frowned.

"Who?"

Rebecca answered quietly.

"The woman who accepted money to raise you."

Emily smiled sadly.

"My grandmother passed away."

Rebecca shook her head.

"No."

"Not Margaret."

"The nurse."

"The one who carried you out of the hospital."

Emily's heart stopped.

"She's alive."

"And she says..."

"...your father wasn't the one who planned everything."

The room froze.

Slowly...

Every eye turned toward Richard Lancaster.

The old billionaire's face turned completely white.

He whispered only two words.

May you like

"...Dear God."
