Chapter 1 - THE SHADOW OF THE PASTThe rain over Lake Michigan didn't fall; it rattled against the high-rise glass of the 32nd floor like loose teeth.

Ariana Vale sat in her cramped, windowless cubicle on the 14th floor, her oversized gray cardigan wrapped around her like body armor. Her heart hammered against her ribs in a chaotic, uneven rhythm. Ten years. Ten years of meticulous erasure. Ten years of dying her hair a dull mouse-brown, hiding her striking emerald eyes behind fake clear-lens glasses, wearing clothes that buried her frame, and keeping her head low.

And in less than three minutes, Lorenzo Duca had reached straight down into the dirt where her past lay buried and dragged his fingernails across the coffin lid.

Her phone buzzed on the desk. An encrypted text message popped up on her secondary burn phone—the one hidden inside the lining of her work bag.

UNKNOWN: He’s asking questions in Palermo. Clear out. Now.

Ariana’s blood turned to ice. Palermo. Lorenzo wasn’t just pulling her corporate background checks; he was using his underworld network to trace her phantom footsteps across Europe.

She didn't pack her desk. Packing meant leaving a trail, signaling panic. Instead, she slipped her laptop into her tote, took her umbrella, and headed toward the fire exit stairs. But as her hand touched the cold steel bar of the door, a shadow fell over her.

"Going somewhere so early, Ms. Vale?"

She turned. Standing at the end of the hallway was Marco Vance—Lorenzo’s right-hand man, a giant of a man with a jagged scar stretching from his earlobe to his collarbone. Two dark-suited enforcers stood behind him.

"I have a migraine," Ariana said, her voice smooth, devoid of the tremor tearing through her chest. "I’m taking sick leave."

"Mr. Duca didn't approve sick leave," Marco replied, stepping forward with an eerie, quiet grace. "In fact, Mr. Duca requested your presence in his private quarters. Not the office. The estate."

"I don't work after hours," she said, stepping back toward the stairwell door.

"You do today," Marco said. "Because ten minutes ago, a man named Valerio Moretti landed at O'Hare. And Mr. Duca thinks you know exactly who that is."

The name Valerio Moretti struck Ariana like a physical blow. The air rushed out of her lungs. Her knees buckled slightly, but she caught herself against the doorframe. Valerio. The monster she had spent a decade escaping. The heir to the Sicilian syndicate who had claimed her as his prize when she was just eighteen—the man whose ring she had fled after burning his empire’s financial ledgers to the ground.

"He found me," she whispered, her facade cracking for the first time in ten years.

"No," Marco corrected, his gaze turning surprisingly cold yet observant. "He found us. But Mr. Duca found him first. Move, Ms. Vale. Before the street outside becomes a warzone."
