Chapter 3 - DANCING WITH THE DEVILThe next evening, the city of Chicago was wrapped in a suffocating velvet darkness.

Lorenzo had transformed Ariana’s world overnight. She was no longer the invisible analyst sitting under fluorescent lights; she was now the central pawn in a deadly game of territorial dominance.

A team of stylists had arrived at the estate at noon under Lorenzo's direct orders. By 8:00 p.m., Ariana stood before the full-length mirror in a private dressing room. She wore a floor-length dress of blood-red silk with a thigh-high slit, her porcelain skin contrasting starkly against the deep crimson fabric. Diamond drops hung from her ears, and her long hair fell in polished, Hollywood waves over her bare shoulders.

She looked stunning. She looked lethal. She looked like the woman she had buried ten years ago.

The door opened, and Lorenzo stepped in, wearing a crisp black tuxedo. He stopped in his tracks, his dark eyes sweeping over her body with an intense, possessive heat that made her pulse race uncontrollably.

"You look like a war," he said softly, walking over to stand behind her in the mirror. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a velvet box. Inside lay a choker of black diamonds, glittering ominously.

"Is this my leash?" Ariana asked bitterly, staring at his reflection.

"It’s your armor," Lorenzo replied softly, fastening the heavy cold diamonds around her throat. His fingers lingered on her collarbone, warm and heavy. "Tonight, the Chicago underworld gathers at the Drake Hotel for the annual charity gala. Valerio will be there. He expects to find a broken woman hiding in the shadows."

He leaned down, his breath warm against her ear. "Show him he failed."

An hour later, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was overflowing with politicians, billionaires, and syndicate lords. Classical violin music floated through the air, masking the whispered threats exchanged over glasses of vintage champagne.

When the doors opened and Lorenzo Duca walked in with Ariana Vale on his arm, the entire room fell dead silent.

Gasps rippled through the elite crowd. The invisible woman from Meridian Capital had disappeared; in her place was a queen of captivating, terrifying grace.

Across the crowded room, standing near a balcony archway, a man froze. Valerio Moretti, now older, with cold graying hair and eyes like a reptile, dropped his crystal glass. It shattered against the marble floor.

His eyes locked onto Ariana. A slow, sickening smile spread across his face.

"Ariana," Valerio murmured, taking a step toward them. "My sweet, dead girl."

Lorenzo stepped slightly in front of her, his hand resting firmly on the small of her back, claiming her silently before the entire room.

"Moretti," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying the weight of a death sentence. "You're in the wrong city."
