CHAPTER 1 — The Spill That Changed Everything

At exactly 9:47 p.m., one mistake rewrote three lives.

The espresso should have landed on the table.

Instead, it exploded across the expensive white shirt of Alaric Tasan, the most feared man in Baltimore's criminal underworld.

Nobody breathed.

Two armed bodyguards reached for their weapons.

The restaurant manager turned pale.

Someone quietly whispered,

"She's dead..."

But Alaric never looked at the ruined suit.

His eyes stayed fixed on the waitress.

Not on her trembling lips.

Not on the burns across her fingers.

On the bruises hidden beneath her sleeve.

Bruises that looked painfully familiar.

For a single heartbeat, he wasn't standing inside Leona's Restaurant anymore.

He was back in a hospital hallway twelve years earlier.

His younger sister Maren sat in a wheelchair wearing the exact same expression.

The expression of someone who apologized for existing.

Back then she had insisted she fell down the stairs.

Three months later she was dead.

Her husband inherited everything.

The police called it suicide.

Alaric never believed them.

And now...

Another woman.

Another pair of frightened eyes.

Another monster wearing respectability instead of blood.

He quietly removed his ruined jacket.

"Tamash."

His lieutenant stepped closer.

"Yes, Boss?"

"Find out who she's afraid of."

Tamash didn't ask questions.

Within thirty seconds three discreet men had spread through the restaurant.

One watched the exits.

Another checked security cameras.

The third quietly photographed every customer inside.

Including the man sitting alone at the wine bar.

Merritt Calloway.

Public servant.

Community hero.

Private nightmare.

Meanwhile...

Tova could barely breathe.

She expected screaming.

Humiliation.

Maybe even violence.

Instead...

The terrifying stranger had handed her his own silk handkerchief.

No anger.

No insults.

Only one quiet sentence.

"Treat the burns first."

Why?

Why would someone like him care?

She hurried into the kitchen, splashing cold water over her shaking hands.

One of the cooks whispered,

"Do you even know who that man is?"

She shook her head.

The dishwasher answered instead.

"That's Alaric Tasan."

The plate slipped from Tova's fingers and shattered across the floor.

Even she knew that name.

Everyone did.

Parents used it to scare teenagers.

Politicians pretended he didn't exist.

Detectives built entire careers trying to arrest him.

If she had spilled coffee on him...

Why was she still alive?

Across the restaurant...

Merritt smiled.

Not because of the accident.

Because he had just discovered something useful.

His wife looked terrified of another man.

Perfect.

He could use that.

Public sympathy always favored respectable husbands.

Especially when their wives appeared to be involved with criminals.

A new plan began forming behind his pleasant smile.

One that would destroy Tova forever.

He finished his wine.

Paid the bill.

And quietly followed Alaric's convoy as it disappeared into Baltimore's rainy streets.

He wasn't stalking a mafia boss.

He thought he was gathering insurance.

May you like

He had no idea...

He had just placed himself directly inside Alaric Tasan's crosshairs.
