CHAPTER 3 — The Evidence Nobody Knew Existed

For twelve years...

Alaric had secretly funded a private investigative team dedicated to one impossible mission.

Prove his sister hadn't taken her own life.

They never succeeded.

But they never stopped collecting evidence.

Thousands of files.

Hundreds of interviews.

Dozens of forensic specialists.

When Tamash quietly added Merritt Calloway's name into their database...

A computer flagged something unexpected.

Not one match.

Thirty-seven.

Thirty-seven women had crossed paths with Merritt over twenty years.

Former girlfriends.

Coworkers.

A college fiancée who suddenly transferred schools.

A neighbor who moved away overnight.

Every one had vanished from his life immediately after reporting emotional abuse.

None had enough proof.

Until now.

Because Tova had something none of them possessed.

She had studied forensic accounting.

Without Merritt knowing...

She had memorized numbers.

Invoices.

Shell companies.

Inspection contracts.

Bribes disguised as consulting fees.

Every illegal payment passed through fake nonprofit organizations.

Organizations where Merritt served as board member.

He thought he had erased everything.

He never imagined his terrified wife remembered numbers better than photographs.

Three nights later...

Alaric returned to Leona's Restaurant.

He requested the same table.

The same hour.

The same waitress.

Tova nearly dropped another tray.

He quietly slid a business card across the table.

No logo.

No name.

Only one handwritten sentence.

You are not the one who should be afraid anymore.

She stared at it.

Then laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because hope felt impossible.

"My husband owns my life."

Alaric answered softly.

"No."

"He only convinced you he does."

Before she could reply...

Merritt walked through the front doors.

He had followed her again.

This time...

He marched directly toward Alaric.

The entire restaurant watched.

"I think you've been bothering my wife."

Silence.

Customers reached for their phones.

The manager looked ready to faint.

Merritt smiled confidently.

He believed reputation would protect him.

He had no idea every security camera inside the restaurant had already been copied.

Every bruise photographed.

Every threat recorded through a microphone hidden beneath table nine.

Alaric slowly stood.

"I know exactly who you are."

Merritt laughed.

"And who are you?"

Alaric's answer chilled the room.

"I'm the man your last victim never had."

For the first time in years...

Merritt's smile disappeared.

But that wasn't the real surprise.

Outside...

Twenty-three black SUVs surrounded the block.

Not to start a gang war.

To escort dozens of federal investigators carrying sealed warrants.

Because Alaric had never intended to kill Merritt.

He had spent seventy-two hours secretly delivering every piece of evidence to the only people who could bury him forever.

The feared mafia boss had just become the anonymous witness in the largest public corruption case Baltimore had seen in decades.

As Merritt was dragged away in handcuffs...

He screamed one question over and over.

"Who betrayed me?"

Neither Alaric nor Tova answered.

Because the truth was far crueler.

May you like

Merritt had destroyed himself years earlier...

The moment he underestimated the quiet woman he believed he owned.
