CHAPTER 5 — The Warehouse Where Good Men Disappeared

Friday arrived with cold rain.
At 10:38 p.m., Merritt told Tova he had an emergency inspection.
He lied so easily it sounded rehearsed.
The moment his car disappeared, another vehicle quietly followed.
A black SUV.
No headlights.
Tamash.
Warehouse 18 stood abandoned beside the docks.
At least...
That's what everyone believed.
Inside, expensive luxury containers were being unloaded without customs inspection.
Weapons.
Counterfeit pharmaceuticals.
Human trafficking records.
Millions of dollars in illegal cargo.
And standing in the middle of it all...
Merritt Calloway.
Laughing with men who would have terrified even seasoned detectives.
Tamash recorded everything.
Faces.
License plates.
Conversations.
Payments.
Then someone shouted,
"Who's outside?"
The lights went dark.
Gunfire exploded across the docks.
Tamash barely rolled behind a concrete pillar as bullets shattered steel containers.
He returned fire only once.
Not to kill.
To escape.
His SUV crashed through a security gate before disappearing into the rain.
Inside the warehouse, Merritt's face turned white.
Someone had seen everything.
Someone had evidence.
And there was only one person who knew enough to destroy him.
Tova.
He drove home like a man possessed.
Tova was asleep when the bedroom door slammed open.
Merritt dragged her from the bed by her arm.
"You talked!"
"I didn't!"
"You told someone!"
She cried as he searched the apartment.
He tore apart furniture.
Smashed dishes.
Ripped open the mattress.
Then...
He found nothing.
Because the evidence wasn't inside the apartment.
It was already sitting on Alaric Tasan's desk.
May you like
For the first time in years...
Merritt looked afraid.
