Chapter 2 - A Heartbeat in the Dark

HOOK: The doctors gave up. The machine went flat. But a father's desperate promise broke the laws of medicine!
"Clear!" Dr. Vance shouted.
Through the observation window, Marcus watched in agonizing helplessness as his wife’s body jolted off the operating table. The monitor remained a flat, agonizing line. Khloe’s heart had stopped under the stress of the internal bleeding.
"Increase the epinephrine! Charge to 200!" Arthur roared, his face pale. He was no longer just a top surgeon; he was a desperate uncle trying to save his family. "Come on, Khloe! Don't you dare give up on us!"
Outside, Marcus collapsed against the glass, leaving a smudge of sweat and tears. "Please," he begged the empty air. "Take me instead. Just leave them."
Meanwhile, down in the hospital’s holding area, Isabella wasn't weeping for her crimes. She was furiously typing on a hidden burner phone she had slipped into her brassiere before her arrest. She wasn't just a bitter ex-girlfriend; she was backed by a shadowy figure who had funded her lifestyle since Marcus broke up with her.
She sent a single text: The brat might not survive. The mother is flatlining. But they have video. Delete the hospital mainframe now.
Back in the OR, three minutes had passed. In the medical world, three minutes without oxygen meant irreversible damage.
"Arthur," the assistant surgeon whispered, placing a hand on Dr. Vance’s shoulder. "The baby’s heart rate is gone too. We’re losing them both. We need to call it."
"No!" Marcus burst through the sterile doors, ignoring the nurses who tried to hold him back. He grabbed Khloe’s cold, limp hand. "Khloe! You told me you didn't fall! You fought to tell me the truth! Don't stop fighting now! Our daughter needs you! I need you!"
As if answering his cry, a faint, erratic blip echoed from the monitor.
Beep.
Then another. Beep. Beep.
"She's back!" the anesthesiologist cried. "But the baby's distress is critical! We have to perform an emergency crash C-section right now!"

Marcus was forcibly pushed out of the room as the surgeons moved with lightning speed. But just as hope flickered, the lights in the entire hospital violently blinked and died. The backup generators kicked in, providing dim, red emergency lighting, but the main surgical monitors went dark.
The hospital’s entire digital mainframe was under a massive cyberattack.
