Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Betrayal

HOOK: The ultimate mastermind wasn't the ex-wife or the stepbrother. The real villain was holding the baby’s college fund!

The revelation shattered the room into a deafening silence. Dr. Arthur Vance stared at the screen, his face turning a ghostly shade of grey. "My son... Ethan? No, this is impossible. Ethan loves you like a brother, Marcus!"

"Ethan managed the IVF clinic's premium accounts," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a chilling, emotionless register. The puzzle pieces were falling into place with terrifying precision. "Julian and Isabella were just loud, violent distractions. Ethan wanted me to destroy Julian, and he wanted Isabella out of the picture so he could step in as the sole guardian of my estate if anything happened to me. And with my child being biologically his, he would legally control the entire Vance-Montenegro legacy."

Right on cue, the heavy wooden door of the ICU room swung open. Ethan Vance walked in, carrying a large bouquet of lilies, a look of profound, engineered sympathy on his face.

"Marcus! I came as soon as I heard Khloe woke up!" Ethan said, stepping forward. "Thank God! And look at little Hope... she looks just like—"

"Like you?" Marcus interrupted, slowly rising from his chair.

Ethan froze, the smile dying on his face. He noticed the tablet in Marcus’s hand, displaying the clinic registry. His eyes flicked to his father, Arthur, who was looking at him with tears of absolute betrayal.

"Marcus, buddy... I can explain," Ethan stammered, backing toward the door. "The clinic made a mistake. It was a lab mix-up during the implantation phase—"

"Save it, Ethan," Marcus said. "We already checked the access logs on the flash drive. You manually altered the records to ensure your genetic material was used. You paid Isabella to stage the attack so Khloe would miscarry or die, leaving me broken, while you acted as the supportive best friend who would eventually inherit the corporate shares."

Ethan’s sympathetic demeanor evaporated. A cold, arrogant sneer replaced it. "So you found out. What are you going to do, Marcus? Sue me? The child is legally yours on the birth certificate, but biologically mine. If this goes to court, the scandal will destroy your company’s stock. You'll lose billions."

"I don't care about the money, Ethan," Marcus said calmly. "But you forgot one thing."

The bathroom door inside the ICU suite opened. Detective Elena Vance stepped out, her service weapon drawn and a recording device in her hand. "We caught every word of that confession on an open police line, cousin."

Ethan turned to flee, but the hallway was already blocked by three uniform officers. He was slammed face-first onto the floor, the bouquet of lilies crushing beneath his boots as the handcuffs clicked into place.

As Ethan was dragged away screaming curses, Marcus rushed back to Khloe’s side. She was fully conscious now, reaching out for their daughter.

Marcus picked up baby Hope and placed her gently in Khloe’s arms. He looked down at the beautiful little girl. Genetic code didn't matter. He had raised her in his heart from the moment he knew she existed. He was her father, and nothing on earth could change that.

Khloe looked up at Marcus, tears streaming down her face. "Is it finally over?"

Marcus kissed his wife’s forehead, wrapping his strong arms around his family as the morning sun finally broke through the hospital windows, chasing away the darkness forever. "It’s over, my love. We’re safe."
