Chapter 3 - THE UNRAVELING

"HE BEGGED HER ON HIS KNEES, BUT WHAT SHE DROPPED ON THE FLOOR LEFT THE GROOM’S ENTIRE FAMILY RUINED!""We are going to have a live auction," Valeria announced, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Since seating at the Castañeda family table is apparently reserved for royalty and those of 'high society,' let’s see how much these velvet chairs are actually worth."

"Valeria, stop this madness!" Don Roberto, Alejandro’s father, finally stepped forward. He was a powerful man, accustomed to commanding boardrooms, but right now, he looked utterly powerless. "You are making a public spectacle of yourself and our family. Think of your future! Think of your career!"

"My future?" Valeria countered, staring him down without an ounce of fear. "My future was almost tied to a family of parasites who value a bank account over human decency. My career is built on my own hard work, Don Roberto, not on your family’s blood money. I have nothing to lose. But you? Your entire reputation is on the line."

The guests at the entrance were now pulling out their phones. Valeria saw the little green and red lights of recording screens pointing toward the stage. She didn't care. In fact, she welcomed it. Let the world see the ugly truth behind the golden facade of the Castañeda dynasty.

Alejandro rushed up the steps of the podium, his hands trembling. "Val, please, I beg you. I didn't mean for it to go this far. My mother... she insisted. She said your parents would feel out of place around the senators and the CEOs. I just wanted to avoid conflict on our wedding day! I love you. Please, let’s just go to the altar. I'll move your parents to the head table right now! Personally!"

"You'll move them now?" Valeria looked at him, her heart breaking not out of sorrow, but out of sheer disappointment. "Because you were caught, Alejandro. Not because you care. If I hadn't walked into this room fifteen minutes before the ceremony, my father would have spent the night watching us eat caviar while he sat next to the dishwashers. You didn't want to 'avoid conflict.' You wanted to please your mother because you are a coward."

"I am not a coward!" Alejandro yelled, his frustration finally breaking through his polished exterior. "I am trying to protect our future! Do you know how much my father’s partners invested in my new firm? If we look like a joke today, it all goes away! We need them, Valeria! Your parents... they don't understand these things. They are simple people!"

A collective gasp echoed through the room. Alejandro realized what he had said the moment the words left his mouth. He reached out to grab Valeria's hand, but she stepped back, looking at him as if he were a complete stranger.

"There it is," Valeria whispered, but the microphone caught every syllable. "The truth always finds a way out."

Slowly, deliberately, Valeria reached up to her head. She unpinned the delicate lace veil, the one her mother had spent weeks hand-restoring from her own wedding dress. She folded it gently and placed it on the podium.

Then, she looked down at the massive, five-carat diamond engagement ring on her left hand. The ring Doña Carmen had bragged about to all her country club friends. The ring that was supposed to bind Valeria to this family forever.

"Valeria, no..." Alejandro whispered, his eyes widening in horror as he realized what she was about to do. "Don't do this. Please. I’m on my knees."

He actually did it. In front of 300 of the city's most prominent figures, Alejandro sank to his knees, grasping at the hem of her white dress.

Valeria didn't even flinch. She slipped the diamond ring off her finger. She held it up so the light of the chandeliers caught its brilliant sparkle.

"This ring," Valeria said into the microphone, "is worth more than my father’s car. But it isn't worth a single drop of his sweat. It isn't worth my mother’s tears."

With a flick of her wrist, Valeria dropped the ring.

It didn't bounce. It hit the polished marble floor with a sharp clink and rolled, stopping precisely at the feet of Doña Carmen.

"The wedding is off," Valeria announced.

But she wasn't done yet. Not by a long shot.
