Chapter 7 - THE FALL OF THE EMPIRE

"ARREST WARRANTS ISSUED! THE CHILLING VIDEO OF DOÑA CARMEN BEGGING FOR MERCY GOES VIRAL!"The next morning, the city woke up to a financial and social earthquake.

The front page of every major newspaper carried the headline: "THE HOUSE OF CARDS: CASTAÑEDA LOGISTICS EXPOSED IN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD SCHEME."

By noon, the state prosecutor's office had officially issued arrest warrants for Don Roberto Castañeda and his son, Alejandro, for money laundering, embezzlement of public funds, and tax fraud.

Valeria sat in her parents' living room, watching the live news broadcast. The screen showed a swarm of reporters outside the Castañeda family mansion. The beautiful, iron-gated estate looked more like a prison than a luxury home now.

Suddenly, the camera caught movement.

Federal agents in black tactical gear marched up the steps, carrying boxes of seized documents. Behind them, Don Roberto was led out in handcuffs, his head bowed, trying to hide his face from the flashing cameras.

Next came Alejandro. He looked pale, disheveled, and completely broken. The tailored Italian suit from the day before was replaced by a simple sweatshirt. As he was led toward the police vehicle, a reporter shouted, "Alejandro! Is it true your bride exposed you because of how you treated her family?"

Alejandro didn't answer. He simply climbed into the back of the police car, his eyes staring blankly ahead.

But the most dramatic moment was yet to come.

Doña Carmen rushed out of the house, screaming at the officers. "You can't do this! Do you know who we are? We are the Castañedas! This is a mistake! It’s all a lie created by that lower-class girl!"

She ran toward a reporter’s camera, her face contorted with desperation, her expensive burgundy gown from the wedding now wrinkled and stained.

"Valeria!" Carmen cried out directly into the lens, tears streaming down her heavily made-up face. "Please! Stop this! Talk to the authorities! Tell them it was a misunderstanding! We will give you the house, the cars, anything! Just don't destroy my family! I beg you!"

Seeing the woman who had looked down on her parents with such disgust now groveling on national television was a powerful, sobering sight.

"She still doesn't understand," Don Arturo said, shaking his head as he watched the television. "She thinks everything has a price tag. Even justice."

"She’s about to learn that some things are priceless, Papa," Valeria said quietly.

Just then, Valeria’s phone rang. It was an email from the National Association of Accountants. Because of her bravery in exposing a major financial crime at great personal risk, they were awarding her a prestigious commendation for professional ethics.

And that wasn't all.

Three top-tier international accounting firms had already reached out to her, offering her senior partner positions with salaries she had only dreamed of. They wanted her integrity, her courage, and her brilliant mind.

Her phone buzzed again. It was a message from an unknown number, but she recognized the typing style immediately. It was Ximena.

“Val, you won’t believe who is waiting outside your house right now...”
