CHAPTER 8 – VANESSA'S FINAL BETRAYAL

Facing decades in prison, Vanessa demanded a meeting with prosecutors.

"I'll tell you everything."

She confessed that Julian had created shell companies, hidden millions overseas, forged signatures, bribed consultants, and manipulated witnesses.

But then she revealed something no one expected.

"There was never any boating accident."

She explained that Julian had disabled Michael Reeves' boat before the trip, knowing rough weather was coming.

Although there wasn't enough evidence to charge Julian with murder, the confession reopened one of Boston's oldest unsolved financial scandals.

Vanessa hoped cooperating would reduce her sentence.

Instead, investigators uncovered proof that she had personally helped destroy financial records after Michael disappeared.

Her deal collapsed instantly.

As officers escorted her away, she spotted Clara in the courthouse hallway.

"I never meant for any of this to happen."

Clara looked at her quietly.

"You didn't mean to get caught."

Vanessa lowered her head.

For the first time, she had no excuse left to hide behind.
